POSITION PURPOSE:     The Certified Nursing Assistant performs semi-skilled nursing tasks in order to maintain the safety, welfare, and comfort of the residents of the facility, such as ensuring the residents receive proper care, proper personal hygiene, safety, meals, and comfort.  Certified Nursing Assistants work rotating shifts that include Saturday and Sunday.  Direct supervision is received on new assignments, although regular assignments are normally performed independently.  Work is evaluated through conferences, reports, observation and assessment by a higher authority.         DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties which may be performed.)   ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: Performs rounds and completes round sheets at the beginning of each shift. Assists residents in personal hygiene care such as bathing, nail care, hair care, and dentures/teeth. Ensures residents' safety, which entails using call lights, bed and wheel chair alarms; preventing skin tears; ensures the safe use of mechanical devices; keeping floors clean, clear and dry; reports unusual events and monitoring and removing medicines or other safety hazards; reports to nurse any change in residents' level of awareness, vital signs, elimination/urination, or abnormal skin conditions. Assists in transporting residents to and from group eating areas. Serves food trays in a timely manner, setting up trays as needed for consumption. Reports to licensed nurses any communication or activity on the part of the residents which may indicate  personal, emotional, or social problems. Assists residents in attending various social activities. Monitors resident rooms for inappropriate storage of foods and medicines and reports violations to supervisor. Makes beds and maintains cleanliness as appropriate. Assures resident rights and dignity are maintained. Interacts positively with coworkers, supervisors, residents and families to maintain and promote positive customer relations.   ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES: Participates in unit-based activities. Transports specimens and equipment as needed and in accordance with established policies. Maintains and utilizes equipment appropriately, reports problems and/or hazards to the supervisor. Attends mandatory inservices as required.       Performs other duties as assigned.   DECISIONS MADE: The Certified Nursing Assistant makes independent decisions regarding when to bathe, feed, and perform physical activities for assigned residents; when to report problems and the complexity of the situation; requests dietary substitutions; and when assistance is needed in moving a resident. Decisions relating to changes in staffing, treatments, diets, and resolution of problems are referred to a higher authority.   CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Work involves contact with residents, family members, visitors, and medical staff to explain and inform of duties, assignments and recommendations for changes in resident care plans.   REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of basic human anatomy and physiology. Knowledge and recognition of human normal and abnormal limits. Considerable knowledge of the skills necessary for activities of daily living. Considerable knowledge of the principles of restoration nursing. Knowledge of the principles of infection control, safety, nutrition, and the ability to apply these principles. Ability to work effectively with and around other employees, as well as elderly and handicapped individuals.   MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant issued by the State of Florida, or the ability to receive certification within four (4) months of hire.   ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy lifting, bending, pulling, and walking.   NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant Aide issued by the State of Florida, or the ability to receive certification within four (4) months of hire.
