Personal Care Aide Position Description

POSITION TITLE: Personal Care Aide

Area of Service: Snohomish County and North King County

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Completion of a State (or similarly accredited) Nurse Aide training program, with a designation as a Patient Care Technician/Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) as well as satisfactory completion of qualifications 2 through 7 below.

2. Satisfactory compliance with Agency bonding criteria, including completion of Disclosure Statement and background check through Washington State Patrol data bank.

3. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with clients, families, coworkers, and all supervisors.

4. Ability to accurately follow and process written and verbal instructions.

5. Minimum score of 80% on PCA competency exam.

6. Complete all Continuing Education Courses (CEUs), 12 annually, as well as other training requirements required by the Agency.

7. Must be able to lift 30 lbs with or without reasonable accommodations.

8. Current Driver s License, Proof of automobile insurance, and daily availability of a car for business use.

Job description

The Personal Care Aide (PCA) provides specifically defined, non-medical care services under the supervision of the Supervisor of Direct Care services/Staffing Coordinator to enable the client to remain in the home. The PCA is a non-licensed employee who provides non-medical personal care and homemaking services in the home setting to clients and families who are unable to perform these activities independently. These non-medical tasks conform to the State of Washington s definition in WAC 246-355-015. These tasks are ordinarily performed by the client, which if not for the client s cognitive or physical limitation(s), would be completed independently by the client or family. The PCA conforms to all agency policies and procedures including providing care, compliance with the Agency Bill of Rights, observing client/family confidentiality, and adhering to the Agency dress code.

Non-medical personal care services

The Non-medical personal care services include, but are not limited to: Personal Care, Dressing,

Bathing, Ambulation, Body Care, Feeding, Medication Assistance Level 2, Positioning, Protective Supervision, Toileting, and Transfers, Colostomy Care, Catheter Care, assist with ROM exercises active and passive, preparing special diets, measuring intake and output and shaving (electric only), nail care (filing only) other duties that the PCA has been trained or certified to perform. Nurse Delegation: If the PCA is certified under Nurse Delegation or Nurse Delegation Diabetes, when delegated by a Nurse (RN), they may perform tasks that fall under the Nurse Licensing, except for injections other than insulin, sterile procedures, and maintenance of central lines.

Routine Duties

1. Maintenance of appropriate agency records, including daily documentation on Care Records.

2. Present and conduct duties in a professional manner according to agency policy.

3. Adhere to infection control and safety procedures, which are in accordance with agency policy.

Household management

1. Light Housekeeping including changing of bed linens, vacuuming, sweeping, dusting of client s environment, emptying client s wastebaskets and garbage. Refrigerators are defrosted, when necessary, if client or caretaker is unable to do so. Cleaning of the bathroom includes bathtub, sink, and toilet. The floor should be vacuumed and mopped if it becomes wet. Cleaning of kitchen includes washing dishes, counter tops and the floor.

2. Personal laundry - that laundry belonging to the client themselves. Laundry for any family members or others in the same home is not the responsibility of caregiver.

3. Transportation for grocery shopping, errands, doctor visits, and other activities when outlined on the care plan.

The Caregiver will not perform heavy-duty household cleaning such as washing walls, waxing floors, washing windows, household repairs or maintenance and yard care or maintenance.

The Personal Care Aide must spend less than 20% of his/her time on general household work.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Eighteen years of age or older.

2. Visual and hearing capacities functioning at a level sufficient enough to provide for the supervisory and physical care needs of clients.

3. Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant or enrolled in a program.

4. Able to read and write English.

5. End of Life Care and support of Hospice.

6. Nurse Delegation Certification for Medication Administration
