Engineer I, Deck Systems

Fincantieri Marinette Marine, a Fincantieri Marine Group Company, is a progressive shipyard specializing in building ships for the United States Navy. We currently have an opportunity for an Engineer I, Deck Systems at our Stevensville, Maryland location. A. Basic Purpose and Function The function of a Deck Engineer is to develop the functional designs of the various Deck systems for the project to which he is assigned. In fulfilling this function he is to assist in determining the technical requirements of the project as related to shipboard Deck systems. He/she is to have the ability to apply the technical requirements in developing Deck Arrangements and edit and/or evaluate tech specifications related to equipment selection. He/she must have the ability to verify the functional design through calculations and validate the design through test procedure development. B. Communication Internally The Deck Engineer must communicate within FMM as follows: * Participate in regular interface meetings with his Lead Engineer (and associated staff members) to assure effective information flow to/from the Project Engineer is maintained. * Attend "as required" meetings to participate in resolution of issues as related to the project to which he/she has been assigned. Participants of these meetings could involve: 1) the Program Manager/Project Engineer for resolution of contract or technical issues; 2) Technical Director for the program * Set up "as required" meetings with the drafters and designers assigned to him to clarify assignments and resolve issues. Externally The Deck Engineer must communicate with individuals/companies outside of FMM as follows: * "As required" meetings with potential outside providers of products and services such that project contract requirements (i.e. equipment suppliers) are established and supported. * "As required" meeting with project customers to resolve issues ranging from functional design technical compliance to Deck system construction, and testing clarifications. C. Supervision The Deck Engineer may be required to guide, oversee or direct resources as determined during the course of the project. This may include responsible individuals (Associate Engineers, Designers and Drafters) all of whom will support the Deck Engineer in the completion of the functional design and supporting documentation associated with Ship board Deck Systems. The Deck Engineer may supervise 1-2 regular FMM or contract employees. The size of his team is dependant on the size of the Deck Design portion of the particular project to which he is assigned. He/she will plan and assign drafting and design efforts to these individuals, as well as, perform checking for the work that is assigned. He/she administers "on the job" training to his team and reviews their performance. Meetings on status and issues are held with these personnel as indicated in Section B of this job description. D. Skills and Competencies: The Deck Engineer must exhibit the capacity to guide, oversee and direct a group of up to 2 people. In so doing he/she must be able to motivate, set expectations and discipline individuals as required to achieve project goals and objectives. Personal competencies must include technical skills in the field of shipboard Deck systems design, supplemented by a clear understanding of schedule requirements. He/she must exhibit time management skills complemented by the ability to prioritize problem solving/issues resolving activities so as to maximize achievement of goals and objectives. E. Qualifications: The Deck Engineer must have as a minimum a BS in Mechanical Engineering, supplemented by a minimum of 2 years of shipboard Deck system or comparable industry design experience, or have an Associate Degree from an accredited junior or technical college with an emphasis in mechanical design/drafting plus 4 years of ship design experience, or this requirement can also be met by High School education plus 5 years of ship design experience. The ability to interpret customer specifications as related to Deck system requirements into functional documentation required to cost effectively design the perspective vessel (or comparable industry system) is a qualification of the Deck Engineer. It is a plus if his years of experience include a familiarity of Regulatory Body Requirements associated with the Shipbuilding industry (i.e. ABS, 46 CFR, and U.S. Coast Guard). It is a plus if the Deck Engineer has experience with FMM's primary Deck Design Tools (AutoCad 2D/3D, Bentley Explorer and BAAN IV MRP system or Pipe Net). The ability to use Microsoft Office Word and Excel is required. F. Roles and Responsibilities Detailed responsibilities and functions of the Deck Engineer include: 1) Resource management as related to the project he/she has been assigned to (i.e. proper delegation of tasks to supporting associate engineers, designers, and drafters). 2) Complete delivery of quality documentation (and tasks) on time and on budget to FMM and Project Customers: a) CDRLs (i.e. Torsional Vibration Analysis review and comment on same, Noise and Vibration study reviews and comments on same, etc.) b) Drawings (Deck Arrangement, Propulsion System Arrangements, etc.) c) Deck system calculations (alignment related tolerance studies, deflection studies as related to shafting systems, etc.) d) Deck systems component selections (in accordance with contract requirements) e) Deck systems installation Procedures f) Test procedures g) Manufacturing work Packs 3) Complete (and apply) as required all engineering related status and tracking documentation for which she/he has a role. To include but not be limited to Special Material Ordering Schedule (SMOS), telephone log form, Design History form, Checklists (i.e. Purchase Technical Specification, Drawings, etc.), CDRL formats, Purchase Specification format and appendices, web based project directory, etc. 4) Complete the following processes/procedures throughout the life of the Project (as assigned ) a) Timely (to schedule) Purchase Technical Specification development (including SMOS updating) b) Development of Engineering Department work pack creation-(during first 4 weeks of project startup) c) Timely review of resource requirement resumes (within 2 days of receipt) 5) The role of the Deck Engineer includes providing Deck Systems design guidance on an "as required" basis. This could require a 5-10 hour per week overtime on a regular basis and 10-20 hours O.T. on a periodic basis (test and trials, project startup, etc.) a) Mentoring of subordinates b) Liaison activities c) Training of subordinates in project specific processes Fincantieri Marinette Marine offers competitive pay with benefits in a growth-oriented environment.
