About this job

Overview

We're a Little Different

Our mission is clear. We bring to life a healing ministry through our compassionate care and exceptional service.

We don't believe in jobs at Mercy, we believe in careers that match the unique gifts of unique individuals; careers that not only make the most of your skills and talents, but also your heart.

At Mercy, you'll feel our supportive community every step of your day, especially the tough ones. We're a team and love working that way.

Mercy's Nurse Externship is a 9-week paid summer program designed to be an extension of the nursing student's formal education process. Students have opportunity to take part in the continuity of patient care and experience the realities of paid employment, staffing patterns and nurse-to-patient ratios. An RN preceptor oversees the student, providing professional clinical guidance during the program. Externs benefit from collaborative exchange, educational opportunities and supplemental learning activities. Upon application, your area of preference will be heavily considered but is not guaranteed. Shadowing opportunity will be provided in a second area if you are not selected for your preferred area.

Responsibilities and QualificationsResponsibilities are to assist with the assessment of the patient, planning the patient's care under the direction of the Registered Nurse Clinical Preceptor, and implementation and evaluation of patient care under supervision of the RN preceptor. Externs are required to follow the schedule of their preceptor, including weekends and holidays, and attend scheduled educational and collaborative sessions. The work requirement is 36 hours per week for 9 weeks.

Frequently asked Questions about Mercy Externships

Q: How will I know if I am selected? Those selected for interview day will be called for scheduling. Extern job offers will be made by phone before March 15, 2018. Those not selected will receive an email. If you are not offered an externship, we encourage you to apply for our year-round Nursing Assistant positions.

Q: What if I have a vacation planned for the summer? Please schedule your vacation outside the program dates.

Q: Will I work in the department I requested? Because our patients come first, each nursing unit must balance the number of Externs with the number of preceptors available. We will heavily consider your unit of preference, however, you may be offered a position in a different unit. Shadowing opportunity will be offered in one of your top areas.

Q: Will I be working days or nights? You will work the hours/shift of your preceptor. Willingness to work either shift (day/night) will maximize your opportunities.

Q: What if I don't get an offer? This is a very competitive program. We expect to make offers to around 20 outstanding candidates. We review each applicant to find the most appropriate fit for available openings. If you are not offered an externship, we encourage you to apply for our year-round Nursing Assistant positions.
