The registered nurse provides individualized nursing care based on knowledge of basic competencies in the fundamentals of nursing and pharmacology using the nursing process applied to geriatric, adult, and adolescent patients from admission through discharge. This position requires knowledge of standards of care, nursing assessment parameters, and pharmacology, including doses, purpose, interactions, side effects, and reactions to medications.

The registered nurse provides competent care to patients with a variety of diagnosis including: diseases of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, neurological, renal and endocrine systems, sepsis, carcinoma and pre- and post- operative surgical patients and pediatric patients. The nurse must be able to recognize life threatening conditions and intervene appropriately; patients at risk for injury and skin break down, and provide patient education and discharge instructions to patients utilizing the electronic health record (EHR).

The registered nurse is responsible for developing, implementing and coordinate an interdisciplinary plan of patient/family care, and either managing that care totally, or through delegation and direction of other members of the nursing care team. The nurse anticipates and recognizes potential problems and intervenes appropriately by notifying and updating the Charge Nurse and Physician and other nursing staff as needed. The nurse provides leadership by managing care through others using Infection Control Principles, Patient Bill of Rights, Standards of Practice (TJC,, Title 22, Professional Practice Acts), organizational policies and procedures and interpreting (or uses others to interpret) Standards of Practice to other staff which may include legal implications. In addition, the nurse actively participates in professional growth opportunities (which may include hospital/unit committee membership and policy and procedure reviews) & provides high quality customer relations utilizing excellent interpersonal & communication skills.

The registered nurse will maintain competency in BLS (Basic Life Support). S/he will complete yearly department and hospital competencies (i.e. ACLS, PALS, NRP, fetal monitoring or other specific training required for the assigned department).

S/he also provides individualized nursing process through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the bio-physical and psychosocial needs of the patients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.

2. Demonstrates in depth knowledge of nursing process in addressing physical, psychosocial, and psychological needs of

patients.

3. Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of unit specific age criteria for patient population.

4. Must demonstrate critical thinking skills.

5. Timely completion of unit specific orientation and competencies.

6. Ability to read, write, hear and verbally communicate in English to the degree required to perform the job.

7. Must possess a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.

9. Must be able to travel in accordance with any requirements of your job (if STCH and/or own vehicle used on STCH business, must possess valid California Driver's License and upon request proof of liability insurance).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.

2. National certification in area of specialty.

3. Greater than one (1) year of working experience in a similar unit with comparable patient acuity.

ICU:

1. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate or must obtain within 90 days of hire.

2. Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certificate or must obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.

3. Sixty-four (64) education hours in critical care theory including the following: Cardiac, ECG monitoring and arrhythmia interpretation, Hemodynamics, Respiratory and Ventilation, Vasoactive medications, Endocrine, and Renal (similar to the AACN [American Association of Critical Care Nurses]) completed within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred:

* Current Critical Care RN (CCRN) certificate.

* One (1) year recent experience in ICU with an acuity level similar to this facility (additional years of experience in a critical care setting of lower acuity will be considered) or One (1) year of recent experience as a registered nurse and acceptance into the intensive care unit training program with successful completion.

* Proficiency with: PA pressure lines, Arterial lines and monitoring, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, IntraAortic Balloon Pumps, Intracranial Pressure Monitoring and Ventriculostomies. Ability to assist with bedside procedures such as emergency resuscitation, chest tube insertion, central line and Swan Ganz insertion, tracheostomy, intubation.
