PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the general direction of the Program Director & Day Camp Director, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with the overall program, supervision of children and day-to-day operation of the Y Camp program. He/she relates to the Program Director, Site Director, Staff Team, and community resource agencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  1. Follow general direction and perform other duties as assigned of by the Day Camp Director, Program Director and/or designee.

  2. Ensure the individual needs of the children are met within the program guidelines.

  3. Utilize sound judgment and discretionary skills in accordance with the Gateway Region YMCA policies.

  4. Maintain positive relationships with many diverse people, including staff, parents, volunteers and program site administration and demonstrate strong public relation skills.

  5. Ensure YMCA policies and guidelines are followed at all times.

  6. Maintain an environment that ensures children’s safety and well being.

  7. Model and put into practice and carry out the YMCA Values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.

  8. Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities that advance all areas of children’s development and learning, including social, emotional, intellectual and physical competence.

  9. Conduct the program in accordance with YMCA goals and principles of developmentally appropriate practices.

  10. Meet the training requirements set forth by the Association Training Model.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Understands the concepts of mutual respect, caring, honesty and responsibility in positive communications and interaction with children, parents and staff.

  2. Assists counselor in development of program content and special events.

  3. Prepare needed materials and supplies for each day’s activities. Arrange area allowing for choice selections when appropriate.

  4. With Senior Counselor responsible for an assigned group of children from the time of sign in and sign out.

  5. Understands role as that of facilitator vs. instructor.

  6. Communicate problems, issues or concerns with supervisor.

  7. Posses the ability to relate to children, parents, peers, branch staff, volunteers and community.

  8. Attend camp orientation and training.

  9. Must pass criminal records check and Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR)

10. Must read and sign YMCA Child Abuse pamphlet and report any suspected case of child abuse to supervisor.

11. Must read and sign YMCA Staff Informational Manual.

12. Must ensure and maintain confidentiality of family, children and staff.

13. Actively participates in all camp activities, special events, including swimming.

14. Follow all guidelines and procedures established by the YMCA.

15. Responsible for ensuring diverse program experiences for children each day.

16. Understand difference between discipline and punishment. Use positive verbal and non-verbal communication with children to build trusting and stable relationships.

17. Must be willing to substitute in any camp with flexibility and a positive attitude.

18. Participate in branch fundraisers.

19. Teamwork is demonstrated through personal interaction amongst all staff.

20. Responsible for insuring the safety of all children.

21. Know where children are at all times.

22. Children provided opportunities to build self-help and independence skills.

23. Must take care of all hygiene requirements of the children.

24. Ensure all children’s individual needs are met with dignity and respect.

25. Program equipment is cared for properly and checked daily for safety.

26. Indoor and outdoor space is monitored daily for health and safety concerns.

27. Report all repairs, incidents, and accidents to the Senior Counselor or Program Director. Reports made on appropriate forms and within required time frame.

28. Responsible to keep program site clean and sanitary to insure health and safety of all children.

29. Keep a neat and clean appearance, in accordance with the standards set by the YMCA. Staff wear nametags and staff shirts while on duty.

30. Responsible for quality customer service-including greeting parents.

31. Serve as a relationship builder for site staff and families enhancing their commitment to the YMCA members and the mission.

32. Keeps current on any new program activities or special events and enhance the programs.

33. Able to interpret YMCA policy and procedures and make independent, sound judgments and decisions, which support the YMCA.

Requirements

  • Must be 16-17 years of age and experience working with children

  • Must have completed at least one year in the YMCA Counselor In Training Program (CIT)

  • Must have attended at least one year of Day Camp as a camper

  • Must have the ability to relate to children, parents, branch staff members and volunteers

  • Must become CPR/First Aid Certified within established YMCA timeline.

  • Must complete YMCA required trainings with in established YMCA timeline.

  • Must follow directions given by supervisor and be self-motivated.
