Position Purpose: 
 

The PetCoach Dog Trainer/Back up Dog Trainer is responsible for ensuring excellent service and care for all animals in our responsibility.  They are responsible for the supervision, control, and management of day care dogs and ensuring the safety of the playgroup.  They are also responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of the playrooms as well as other areas of the facility as assigned.  And, in their capacity as a back-up dog trainer, this role also works with guests and their pets provide exceptional dog training instruction and customer service.  As a trainer, they will enhance communication between dog and pet parent by offering positive solutions and rewarding successes while providing a fun and safe environment.  You must be a high performing pet loving coach, obsessed with accompanying pet parents on their journey as they learn, shop, and discover the wide array of services we provide. Most importantly, you share the PetCoach mission and values with all partners and guests.

 

Essential Job Functions: The incumbent must be able to perform the following with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ensure a consistent, professional dog day care experience aligned with our Brand Standards and Guest Promise. 
  • Interact with dogs in playgroups using appropriate toys and tools to ensure safe levels of play and minimizing stress levels of all dogs in the playgroup.
  • Maintain visual observation of dogs at all times and spread attention and play among all dogs in the playgroup.
  • Control level of play by following dog management and control procedures and instructions provided.
  • Use proper dog handling techniques. 
  • Use proper dog introduction/ evaluation procedures.
  • Use appropriate praise and dog correction/ redirection methods.
  • Ensure you know all dogs in the playgroup and can properly identify them.
  • Watch all new dogs carefully and immediately consult with Pet Services Coach if you have concerns.
  • Report any unusual behavior or eliminations or injuries to Pet Services Coach or Head Coach.
  • Maintain playroom cleanliness.  Scoop dog waste immediately and dispose of it as instructed.  Mop any accidents immediately.  Wet mop floors as assigned.  Disinfect potty area.  Clean water bowls and any play elements. 
  • Communicate status of all dogs in the playroom anytime you are relieved for breaks or shift changes.
  • Never leave dogs unattended.
  • Interact professionally and effectively through verbal and written communication with all pet parents and fellow PetCoaches regarding Dog Day Care.
  • Build relationships with pet parents to encourage guest retention across training and all pet services.
  • Understand services across all platforms to ensure pet parents have a pet care plan that incorporates all that their pet needs. 
  • Lead pet parents and dogs through Training Programs, classes and seminars.  Promote positive training philosophy and ensure a safe training environment.   
  • Ensure a consistent, professional Training experience aligned with our Brand Standards and Guest Promise.   
  • Consistently meet and exceed store’s budgeted sales and margin goals for Training programs. 
  • Interact professionally and effectively through verbal and written communication with all pet parents and fellow PetCoaches regarding Dog Training. 
  • Engage with co-workers to cross-train on Training programs and ensure promotion to all pet parents.  Use all tools to drive training business. 
  • Maintain class related materials.   
  • Build relationships with pet parents to encourage guest retention across training and all pet services. 
  • Perform all special or other projects as assigned.   

Work Environment:

 

The majority of job duties are conducted indoors, although merchandise

receiving,merchandise carry-outs, or stock balancing will require leaving the store

briefly. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 100 lbs. as necessary) nd

standing for long periods of time.  The large majority of this associate’s time with

bespent in direct contactwith our guests and their dogs.    


 

 


Education and Experience: 

High school diploma or equivalent is required. 

Previous experience as a dog trainer preferred.  Must complete Petco’s Positive Dog trainer program

and must maintain designation of Petco Positive Dog Training certified DTI.  Must be able to learn

quickly from a variety of sources including classroom instruction, video instruction, and reading

comprehension and application.  Must demonstrate an aptitude for training, motivation and sales

techniques, analytical abilities as well as a professional appearance and demeanor.
