Process Development Chemist

The process chemist position assumes the lead role in the laboratory scale-up of personal care formulations. The position involves working closely with formulation chemists to gain an understanding of each formula and associated process developed at the bench scale. The role of the process chemist is to optimize each process and understand the viable process limits in addition to supporting the sampling program defined by customer and organizational needs. The process chemist is responsible for transferring completed processes to production.

Perform laboratory pilot (alpha scale) scale-up of personal care formulations transferred from bench top formula development.
* Perform process mapping and optimization of processes developed at alpha scale.
* Develop process parameter limits for alpha scale processes.
* Perform bench top formulation as necessary to assist in developing alpha scale formulations and associated processes.
* Create/edit/maintain necessary documentation associated with alpha scale development.
* Produce alpha scale batches of personal care formulations for stability, formula characteristic testing, and validation (when required).
* Produce customer samples in repeatable manner
* Support production of test samples based on customer request or internal sales and marketing needs
* Assist in development of batch records and necessary data packages for transferring completed personal care products and associated processes to engineering.
* Work with engineering team and manufacturing to facilitate transfer of alpha scale processes to production.
* Alpha scale equipment calibration and maintenance.
* Work with R&D and Engineering to specify new equipment required for alpha scale processes.
* Must have basic knowledge of mixers, homogenizers, pumps, piping and the ability to install and/or replace on as needed basis.
* Apply statistical methods (DOE) and perform product/process optimization

* Assume responsibility for laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, and compliance pertaining to alpha scale development.
* Bench formulation and development of bridge products consisting of modified standard products.
* Perform bridging studies to verify that the performance and stability of bridge products is maintained relative to reference products
* Ability to react quickly to changing requirements and new processing developments.
