PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the general guidance and direction of the Program Director for aquatics and while following the YMCA philosophy of developing healthy spirit, mind and body, the water fitness instructor will organize and teach a water exercise class for all levels of fitness while maintaining a safe environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  1. Teach a safe, effective workout emphasizing muscle strength, endurance and flexibility according to the Gateway Region YMCA Aquatic Program Model.
  2. Create and maintain positive relationships within the membership and staff.
  3. Ensure YMCA aquatic policies and guidelines are followed at all times.
  4. Model, practice and carry out the YMCA Values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Develop and execute exercise routines to meet class descriptions keeping safety of participants paramount.
  2. Communicate purpose of each exercise to participants including particular muscle involvement.
  3. Motivate and encourage class to attain their personal goals.
  4. Teach methods of monitoring exertion level during class.
  5. Demonstrate proper use and maintenance of equipment.
  6. Teach methods of increasing or decreasing intensity of moves to meet personal needs.
  7. Keep accurate class records as required by department.
  8. Attend semiannual in-services and workshops as available for professional development.
  9. Keep a neat and clean appearance, in accordance with the policies set by The Gateway Region YMCA. Wear name tag and staff shirt prior to entrance into water.
  10. Promote YMCA programs and volunteerism in classes.
  11. Communicate any problems or incidents to supervisor promptly.
  12. All other duties as required by supervisor.

Requirements
Education
  • Completion of middle school

Experience
  • Minimum of six months previous experience teaching or participation in a water fitness class

Special Skills, Licenses, Certifications or Equipment
  • Certification in YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistant or YMCA Lifeguard within 30 to 60 days
  • Certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Emergency Oxygen Administration and First Aid within 30 to 60 days
  • YMCA Water Fitness Instructor certification within six months
  • Complete Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program within six months - if teaching the course
