POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Vertical Horizons, our youth & teen fitness program, is a grant-funded exercise and wellness program designed to target youth obesity in the St. Louis City area. The purpose of this job is to help facilitate the program in our partner schools under the direction of the Program Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Deliver a highly interactive experience to group of youth participants in the program and create an experience that promotes higher education, personal goals, academic skills, and leadership development.
  2. Develop opening/closing program activities, icebreakers, team-builders, and small group activities for program participants
  3. Build relationships with the children under your supervision and help them to learn and demonstrate the YMCA core values.
  4. Organize and lead a variety of stimulating activities appropriate for youth with a positive and enthusiastic manner.
  5. Provide safe conditions for the children and refrain from engaging in activities that may be hazardous or negligent to the wellbeing of the children.
  6. Supervise children at all times and be responsible for assertive discipline procedures.
  7. Keep the Program Director informed of activities and any progress of problems or questions related to the program.
  8. Responsible for all aspects of customer service – including greeting parents, handling questions and staying informed on program activities.
  9. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Background in education preferred
  • Experience with exercise instruction preferred
  • Must have experience and ability to lead and communicate with school age children
  • Strong commitment to providing quality recreational experiences to children
  • Able to lead, plan, organize and implement program activities
  • Flexible in planning programs for youth groups
  • Must have strong communication, organization and detail skills
  • Must have the ability to relate to children, parents, branch staff members and volunteers
  • Must follow directions, have strong leadership skills, be self-motivated and possess knowledge of group work principals and processes
