The Endoscope Reprocessing Technician (ERT) is highly skilled and works with complex endoscopes used to perform complex, advanced patient procedures including GI/Pulmonary, endoscopic cases. Responsibilities are focused on the very detailed, precise technical aspects of cleaning, disinfecting, inspecting, sterilizing and putting together the complex scopes in accordance with regulatory agency specifications. Endoscopes use advanced technology and are intricately designed. Endoscopes are used in complex GI/Pulmonary, endoscopy medical procedures for patients that may have acute, complex medical conditions. The position requires strong, critical attention to detail to perform accurate and thorough work as the consequences of inappropriate/insufficient endoscope reprocessing may have an adverse negative impact to safe patient care and outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • CRCST from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or CSPDT from The Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
  • Advanced Requirement: Must complete and hold an advanced certification from either Healthcare Sterile Processing Associated (HSPA) or The Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD), within 6 months of hire. Advanced Certification may be any of the following: -Certification in Endoscope Reprocessing (CER) from HSPA -Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) from CBSPD
  • Must maintain certification by completing CEU's and renewing certifications as a condition of employment.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience/training
  • At least five (5) years recent experience in a similar setting to Sterile Processing Unit is required.
  • One year demonstrated current (within the last two years) experience working with flexible scopes.
  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience adhering to American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) recommended practices.
  • Knowledge of AORN (Association of Operating Room Nurses) Recommended practices on care of instruments scopes & powered surgical instruments, cleaning and processing of instruments, selection & use of packaging materials, surgical attire, traffic patterns in the surgical suites and operating room sanitation.
  • Strong attention to detail, quality, and thoroughness to complete work in timely and accurate manner.
  • Independent critical thinking skills and initiative to recognize, identify and solve problems recognizing potential impact to others, patients, internal and external customers.
  • Experience using Sterile Processing Unit programs and computers including instrument tracking program, email, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
  • Ability to apply policy and procedure when making decisions.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and report problems accurately and timely.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment to recognize situations that need to be escalated and notify supervisor or other management of unusual or unexpected situations.
  • Ability to assist in planning and organizing workflow well; and to meet established turn-around-times, and deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize work to meet established turnaround times and administrative deadlines.

Department Overview

The Sterile Processing Department is a department within Perioperative Services that supports operating rooms by cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing surgical instrumentation and equipment, flexible and ridged scopes, and case-picking equipment. The Sterile Processing Department supports Patient Care Services, Ambulatory Services and the Primary Care Network: within the Health System by cleaning, disinfecting reusable equipment and the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilization of surgical instrumentation used by these services. Sterile Processing cleans and restocks all emergency crash carts, first responder bags, airway boxes and ICU transport bags for the Health System. Sterile Processing also manages fiscal. material, and human resources to support the planning and coordination of surgical care and other patient care in the hospital and clinics.
