Position Overview

Avail Staffing is currently seeking experienced 1st Class Manual Machinists to join our team in Norfolk, VA. This role involves high-level machining responsibilities including interpreting blueprints, operating precision machine tools, and performing complex maintenance and repair tasks. Candidates will be expected to work with a variety of systems such as propulsion shafting, engines, valves, and deck machinery while maintaining strict safety and quality standards.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints and technical documents to complete machining tasks accurately.
  • Utilize precision measurement instruments including micrometers, Vernier calipers, height gauges, and dividing heads.
  • Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, and other machine tools to exact tolerances.
  • Perform non-routine maintenance and repairs on portable machine tools.
  • Use hoisting and rigging equipment to maneuver heavy parts and assemblies.
  • Determine and apply appropriate tolerances for various mechanical systems.
  • Conduct work on ship systems including:
    • Rudders & Steering Systems – fitting, blue-checking, alignment.
    • Bearings & Bushings – selection and application of lubrication methods.
    • Engines, Motors & Generators – work with diesel engines, gas turbines, and rotating machinery.
    • Propulsion Shafting – including CPP systems and hydraulic couplings.
    • Seals – installation and maintenance of gaskets and mechanical seals.
    • Valves – leak testing and seat type identification.
    • Propellers – polishing, fitting, and alignment.
    • Pumps – including associated valving and alignment.
    • Deck Machinery – gearbox maintenance and system alignment.
  • Supervise and mentor junior machinists, ensuring work is delegated appropriately and performed to standard.
  • Promote and maintain a safe work environment, including proper handling, use, and storage of industrial gases.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a manual machinist in an industrial or marine environment.
  • Proficient with manual lathes, mills, and other machine tools.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and precise hand-eye coordination.

  • 18 years or older
