h2About the Department/h2pUnder general supervision of the Assistant Chief of Police or their designee, Crossing Guards assist children and other pedestrians in crossing at designated points throughout the Village, primarily during school drop-off and pick-up times. The Crossing Guard may, from time to time, assist the Police Department at special events where the safe crossing of pedestrians at designated crossing points is required. Crossing Guards are expected to adhere to all state laws and local ordinances pertaining to traffic/pedestrian safety./ph2Position Duties/h2p- Complies with all Village policies and procedures, including those defined in the Village of Grafton Employee Handbookbr- Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in Village and department attendance policies and procedures.br- Must possess required knowledge skills, abilities and experience and to be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Other related duties may be assigned.br- Assist children and other pedestrians in crossing streets safely at designated crossing points at the beginning and end of the school day, and stopping traffic when necessary.br- Ensures children and other pedestrians crossing the streets do so in a safe and orderly fashion.br- Informs motorists and stops traffic, through prescribed standard signals that children or other pedestrians are about to use the crosswalk and have the right of way.br- Immediately, or as soon as practical, reports incidents and conditions detrimental to the safety of pedestrians and motorists to the Grafton Police Department or to the Ozaukee County Dispatch Center.br- Reports incidents and conditions detrimental to the safety of pedestrians and motorists to the Grafton Police Dispatcher as soon as practicable.br- Reports discipline problems of children related safety to the proper school officials and the Police Department.br- Assumes responsibility of reporting to their assigned position on time, and contacts the on-duty supervisor in advance if they will be unable to be at their assigned location.br- Maintains a pleasant, courteous, and helpful demeanor when communicating with the children, the public, and other Police Department personnel.br- Will be expected to keep track of when school(s) are delayed or closed, and to adjust schedule accordingly. Also must be prepared to go on duty when a cancellation or early dismissal arises.br- Assures that the Department and Village's mission, goals and objectives are fully supported and initiated.br- Regular attendance is required for this position.nbsp;/ph2Minimum Qualifications/h2pstrongEducation and Experience:br/strong- Must be at least 18 years of age.br- High school diploma or GED.br- Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including a physical exam.br- Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security-sensitive nature, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment/pre-placement and random alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in the Village personnel policy and procedures.brbrstrongNecessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:br/strong- Must be able to work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions and extremes.br- Must be able to walk across the streets unassisted and/or stand in place for long periods of time.br- Must be able to judge distances of oncoming traffic.br- Must speak and understand, using the English language.br- Must have a general knowledge of traffic safety and pedestrian safety.br- Must be able to supervise children.br- Must be reliable.br- Excellent interpersonal/customer service skills.br- Excellent organizational skills.br- Ability to handle multiple priorities and direction from multiple department members.br- Ability to work efficiently under general supervision.br- Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally with various audiences.br- Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations.br- Ability to operate and control traffic control devices.br- Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information, such as federal laws, state statutes, and local ordinances.br- Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.brbrstrongSpecial Requirements:nbsp;br/strong- Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application;br- Must be 18 at time of application;br- Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Wisconsin Driver's License without record of suspension or revocation in any state;br- Ability to pass a drug screen, physical examination, and background check.
