Employees in this position assist in the care and instruction of a classroom of children.  Work activities focus on social relationships between children to help develop a sense of security and trust, to redirect undesirable behaviors into socially acceptable behaviors, and to provide basic instruction in self-help skills, cognitive and language skills, and physical development. Substitutes/floaters assist with procedures and methods of teaching according to the needs of a group of children and as directed by the lead teacher.  In the floater position, the employee  gives morning breaks for teachers, mixes and distributes water jugs and bleach solutions, prepares afternoon snack, does light housekeeping such as laundry, checks each class for needed supplies, assists with lunch breaks in 1 classroom, and gives teacher planning breaks.  Work is reviewed by lead teacher and/or center director.  Floaters/Substitutes will follow CACFP guidelines as directed by staff and will maintain compliance with all CACFP requirements.

 

Position Duties

Employees in this position: supervise children’s play, meal, toilet, and rest time activities; prepare meal/snack; perform light housekeeping duties; diaper and properly clean up children after diapering.    Assist with handwashing throughout the day.  Use materials for classroom instruction, recreation activity, or motor skills development as directed by teacher.  Supervise procedures for keeping toys and play areas clean.  Retrieve materials from central storage/supply areas for artwork materials, games, books, audio-visual materials, and other instructional materials as needed.  Specific daily duties will be directed by lead teacher or center director.  

Minimum Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of developmental characteristics of toddlers and preschool children.
  • Basic knowledge of child care methodology and developmentally appropriate practices in discipline. 
  • General knowledge of basic reading, writing and math skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to establish rapport with children and parents.
  • Ability to communicate well with peers, teachers, and community resources/professionals.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
  • Knowledge of good health practices as well as licensing and sanitation requirements.
  • Ability to respond to children in gentle and nurturing ways.
Other Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalency is required, and at least two years of experience in working with young children in nursery school, kindergarten or child care facility is preferred.
