Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WAI-ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications), and their application within the context of complex web platforms desired.
- Experience with content management systems (such as Brightspace (D2L), Canvas, or Blackboard Learn), particularly those used in higher educational settings, and enterprise resource planning (such as Ellucian, Oracle, Workday, or Salesforce) systems. Familiarity with accessibility features within video platforms and project management/ticketing systems.
- IAAP Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) or Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) certification.
- Experience in developing and delivering accessibility training programs tailored to specific web platforms.
- Familiarity with user-centered design principles and inclusive design methodologies.
- Experience working in higher education.
- Knowledge of relevant accessibility laws and regulations, including Section 508 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The Digital Accessibility Specialist, within the newly established Digital Accessibility Team in the Client Services unit of EITS, is a crucial position responsible for ensuring the university's websites and digital content are accessible, in compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1. This role involves conducting accessibility audits, providing expert guidance, and training related to content management platforms such as Banner, Brightspace (D2L), developing and implementing accessibility best practices, and collaborating with various departments to cultivate a culture of digital inclusion. The specialist will remain current with accessibility standards and technologies to uphold the university's commitment to equitable access.

- A thorough understanding of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1.
- Proficiency in using accessibility evaluation tools and assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers, keyboard navigation) to assess the accessibility of web applications and content.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical accessibility concepts to diverse audiences.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and recommend solutions for accessibility barriers within complex web systems.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Accessibility Audits and Evaluations:
- Perform thorough accessibility audits of university websites, web applications (including Banner, D2L, TeamDynamix, and Kaltura implementations), and digital documents using automated tools and manual testing methods.
- Identify accessibility barriers specific to these platforms and provide detailed, actionable remediation recommendations.
Monitoring and Reporting:
- Regularly monitor the digital accessibility of university websites and digital content.
- Track progress on WCAG 2.1 compliance initiatives and generate reports on the institution's digital accessibility status.
Remediation Support:
- Assist units and individuals in implementing accessibility fixes and provide support during the remediation process.
- Validate the effectiveness of implemented solutions through follow-up testing within these platforms.
Platform-Specific Guidance:
- Serve as the subject matter expert on web accessibility best practices relevant to the university's primary web technologies.
- Provide tailored guidance and consultation to developers and content creators working within these systems.
Training and Awareness:
- Develop and deliver targeted in-person and online training sessions, workshops, and resources focusing on digital accessibility.
- Promote awareness of WCAG 2.1 AA compliance and digital accessibility principles across the institution.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with Enterprise Information Technology Services teams, UGA Equal Opportunity Office, the Center for Teaching and Learning, UGA Libraries, Office of Online Learning, academic unit information and instructional technology support, and other stakeholders to integrate accessibility considerations into the development, implementation, and maintenance of content.
User Feedback:
- Gather and incorporate feedback from users with disabilities in partnership with the Office of Accessibility and Testing to continuously improve the accessibility of university digital resources.
Best Practice Implementation:
- Contribute to the development and implementation of university-wide web accessibility best practices, guidelines, and documentation with specific considerations for ensuring compliance.
Accessibility Testing and Quality Assurance:
- Establish and maintain digital accessibility testing protocols, specifically for content and applications.
- Integrate digital accessibility checks into relevant development and content management workflows.
Staying Current:
- Keep abreast of the latest developments in web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 and beyond), assistive technologies, and platform-specific accessibility.
Supervision of Student Assistants:
- Hire, train and oversee the day-to-day management of Digital Accessibility Team student assistants.
