Job Description: Surgical Technologist - Certified/First Assist - Operating Room
About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled Certified Surgical Technologist/Certified First Assist to join our team at Sweetgrass Plastic Surgery. As a Certified Surgical Technologist/CSFA, you will be responsible for assisting the surgical team in the operating room, ensuring that all equipment is properly sterilized and functioning, and maintaining a sterile environment throughout the surgical procedure. You will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our patients, and will work closely with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide the highest quality care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Preparation and Setup:
- Prepare and maintain the sterile field before, during, and after surgical procedures.
- Sterilize and organize surgical instruments and equipment.
- Verify the correct surgical instruments, implants, and supplies are available for the procedure.
- Assist in positioning patients on the operating table.
- Assisting in Surgery:
- Provide direct support to the surgeon and surgical team as a First Assist, including holding retractors, cutting sutures, and performing other tasks under the surgeon’s direction.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, sponges, and other supplies during surgery.
- Maintain and monitor surgical instruments and equipment throughout the procedure.
- Sterile Techniques and Safety:
- Maintain a sterile environment, ensuring all protocols are followed to prevent infections.
- Constantly monitor the sterile field and immediately address any breaches in sterile technique.
- Assist in the safe disposal of surgical waste.
- Post-Procedure Duties:
- Assist with dressing wounds and securing dressings.
- Clean and sterilize surgical instruments and operating room equipment after procedures.
- Prepare the operating room for the next procedure.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Work closely with the surgical team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses, to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
- Follow all safety and procedural guidelines to protect patients and staff.
- Communicate effectively with other team members to ensure readiness for the surgery.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Graduation from an accredited surgical technologist program.
- Certification from NBSTSA/NCCT/CSFA
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a surgical technologist or in a similar role, preferably with First Assist duties in an operating room setting. Highly desirable candidates will have plastic surgery experience.
- Certifications and Licenses:
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) is required.
- Completion of First Assist training or certification is preferred (e.g., Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA)).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Skills:
- Expertise in sterile techniques, surgical instruments, and equipment.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, surgical procedures, and operating room protocols.
- Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
