Job Description

Shape the Future of Child & Adolescent Mental Health in a Community That Needs You

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Faculty | Texas Tech El Paso, TX

Outpatient-only practice. Protected research time. Meaningful teaching. Light call. A city with no state income tax and mountains on the horizon.

A Practice Built Around You

This isn't a position you fit yourself into — it's one that fits around the career you want to build. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso is recruiting a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist to join a thriving, collegial faculty in a department that combines meaningful clinical work, genuine academic freedom, and a culture where people actually enjoy coming to work.

Pure outpatient. No inpatient. No overnight hospital call. Your clinical focus stays exactly where you want it: in the community, with kids and families who need you.

What Your Day Looks Like

You'll practice in a 100% outpatient, community-based setting — general child and adolescent psychiatry, community clinic, and substance abuse contexts. You'll work alongside six Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellows, forensic fellows, and psychology post-doctoral trainees, with ample opportunity to teach and mentor if that energizes you.

Call is genuinely light: phone-only coverage, one weekend or three weeknights per month, with evenly rotated holidays. Optional in-person ER call is available for those who want additional compensation — but it's never required.

Room to Grow — In Every Direction

Leadership. Interested in building something? Opportunities exist to lead expansion into a partial hospitalization program and to supervise substance use disorder treatment — with the institutional backing to make it real.

Research. You'll receive 20% protected time for scholarly activity from day one. Two fully funded, statewide research projects are ready for you to join immediately — focused on childhood trauma and depression/suicide in children and adolescents ages 8–20. An additional $3,000 in departmental research support is available for faculty pursuing independent work, and grant-funded faculty (including R01-eligible investigators) can negotiate additional protected time.

Academic Presence. Conference presentations are actively encouraged and supported. This is a department in active growth, with stable, upfront state funding — not promises, not soft money.

El Paso: More Than You'd Expect

El Paso is one of the most underrated cities in the Southwest, and it's growing fast.

  • No Texas state income tax — your compensation goes further here
  • Outstanding schools, both public and private
  • A culturally rich, bilingual community with world-class dining and a vibrant arts scene — symphony, museums, minor league baseball and soccer
  • World-class outdoor living: Franklin Mountains in your backyard, skiing within two hours
  • A city where your work has real community impact — and where you'll feel it
