This position is distinguished from the Telecommunications Utility Worker III in that the latter is capable of performing more complex duties assigned to the division. It is further distinguished from the Telecommunications Worker I classification by the requirement to hold a commercial driver license (CDL) and other assignment-specific certifications./div/ph2Position Duties/h2pdiv style="text-align: justify"strongThis description covers the most significant essential and auxiliary duties performed by the position, but does not include other occasional work, which may be similar, related to, or a logical assignment for the position./strongbrbrstrongEssential Duties:/strong/divdiv style="text-align: justify"1. Install, maintain, inspect and repair of City Telecommunication fiber cable including but not limited to; boring for the installation of conduit, operating supporting equipment, location of conduit path, reading engineered plans and installing fiber cable, and basic fiber splicing. /divdiv style="text-align: justify" /divdiv style="text-align: justify"2. Troubleshoot physical connectivity issues including but not limited to proofing conduit, locating fiber breaks, and discovering physical issues that can/will impair broadband operations. /divdiv style="text-align: justify" /divdiv style="text-align: justify"3. Perform emergency repairs to the fiber optic network/divdiv style="text-align: justify" /divdiv style="text-align: justify"4. Perform fiber termination box installation on exterior of home or businesses and run exterior cables to the equipment locations. /divdiv style="text-align: justify" /divdiv style="text-align: justify"5. Operate various public works equipment including, but not limited to, dump truck, loader, backhoe, mower, excavator, vacuum unit, vactor, jack hammer, chain saw, lance torch, directional boring equipment, etc. Perform operator maintenance, such as conducting pre- and post-operation checks, maintaining proper fluid levels, changing parts, cleaning, etc. Adhere to and perform established maintenance schedules on vehicles and equipment (e.g. service, tune-ups, etc.)./divdiv style="text-align: justify" /divdiv style="text-align: justify"6. Maintain and organize tool room and stock. Ensure that all hand tools are accounted for and are placed in a safe and usable condition. Perform general inventory to account for all supplies, tools and equipment. Enter totals and reconcile in computer. Run related reports as necessary./divdiv style="text-align: justify" /divdiv style="text-align: justify"7. Conduct preventative maintenance or repair on variety of small engine equipment. Troubleshoot problems./divdiv style="text-align: justify" /divdiv style="text-align: justify"8. Perform other related duties as assigned./div/ph2Minimum Qualifications/h2pdiv style="text-align: justify"strongKnowledge of:/strong General knowledge of the proper operation and maintenance of vehicles, tools and equipment, practices, methods, hazards and safety precautions used in the maintenance and repair of City infrastructure. Knowledge of the installation of outside/inside plant telecommunications and fiber optic cable.brbrstrongAbility to: /strongInteract effectively with the public and employees. Operate all required vehicles and equipment, such as forklift tractor/loader, brush chipper tractor/mower, truck with or without trailer; use a variety portable power tools; and use a variety of hand tools.brbrstrongEducation and Experience:/strong Typical education would include high school diploma or equivalent. Typical experience would include one year of relevant experience including operating heavy equipment, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.brbrstrongSpecial Requirements/Licenses/strong: Possession of valid Driver’s License and Class A Oregon Commercial Driver’s License is an essential function of the job. Failure to maintain licensure is grounds for disqualification of continued employment. Also required are: current CPR/First Aid card and Work Zone Traffic Safety certification. Ability to obtain a Forklift certification and Competent Person certification within six months of appointment.brbrstrongDesirable Qualifications:/strong Previous experience in a municipal public works department, in construction trades, or telecommunications experience. brbrstronguSUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: /u/strongbrstrongPhysical Demands: /strongWhile performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, extensive walking while reading water meters, bend, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls. The position requires mobility. Many duties are physically demanding requiring entry to confined spaces and occasionally moving materials weighing up to 100 pounds. Movement of materials weighing up to 75 pounds may consume up to 15% of the work period. Activity and types of duties performed require manual dexterity and coordination.brbrstrongWorking Conditions: /strongThe majority of duties take place outside of buildings with exposure to all types of weather conditions and on a year-round basis, sewage, bio-hazards, traffic, dirt, oil, grease, fumes, noise and chemicals.
