Job Title: Medical Physicist

Location: Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA (with travel to affiliated clinics and hospitals)

Start Date: October 01, 2025

Clearance: Must complete SF-86 and fingerprinting; U.S. citizenship required

Work Schedule

  • Typical Hours: 8 Hours Monday to Friday between 0600 2000
  • Travel: Occasional travel (2 3 times/month) to supported commands or clinics within the Tidewater region (reimbursed if beyond 40-mile radius)
Qualifications
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in a hospital setting as a Diagnostic Medical Physicist (within the past 7 years)
  • Meets FDA 21 CFR 900.12 requirements for mammography evaluations
  • Meets ACR accreditation requirements for: Mammography, Computed Tomography (CT), and Ultrasound
  • Qualified or able to qualify as a: Diagnostic Imaging Systems Performance Surveyor and Shielding Expert (per BUMEDINST 6470.22B)
  • At least 1 year of experience within the past 3 years working with: DICOM standards and PACS systems
  • Strong understanding of imaging workflow, image quality, and system integration
  • License/Certification: Board Certification in medical physics from a CAMPEP-sanctioned certifying agency OR active licensure by a CAMPEP-sanctioned jurisdiction.
  • BLS certification (AHA or American Red Cross; online courses not accepted)
Responsibilities
  • Perform acceptance testing, performance evaluations, and routine quality control of imaging equipment, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, X-ray, fluoroscopy, mammography, and nuclear medicine systems
  • Conduct radiation dosimetry, shielding evaluations, and equipment calibrations
  • Ensure compliance with ACR, FDA, Joint Commission, and DHA standards
  • Provide technical guidance for radiation protection and safety procedures
  • Prepare and submit required documentation and performance reports
  • Support the Medical Physics Residency Program through lectures, mentoring, and evaluations
  • Participate in imaging quality assurance activities and accreditation readiness
  • Collaborate with PACS engineers and clinical staff to resolve imaging system issues
  • Provide didactic instruction and consultative services as needed
  • Maintain current knowledge of imaging technologies and regulatory standards
