Aerial Drop Technician – Installation & Maintenance

Position Overview:

The Aerial Drop Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and servicing overhead (aerial) drop wires that connect telecommunication services from utility poles to residential and commercial customer locations. This role ensures consistent, high-quality delivery of internet, cable, and telecom services while prioritizing safety, customer satisfaction, and compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Installation & Maintenance:

  • Install, splice, and secure aerial drop wires from distribution points (utility poles) to customer premises.
  • Safely climb poles using proper gear (climbing hooks, bucket trucks) to run and attach drop cables.
  • Mount and weatherproof connections at both pole and premise entry points.
  • Replace or reroute damaged or outdated aerial drops as required.


Technical Operations:

  • Conduct signal testing, diagnostics, and adjustments to ensure optimal service levels.
  • Verify and ensure proper grounding and bonding of all aerial drops in compliance with technical standards.
  • Identify and troubleshoot service interruptions, faults, or signal degradation using test meters and diagnostic tools.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Strictly adhere to OSHA, NESC, and company safety standards, especially when working at heights or around electrical infrastructure.
  • Perform pre-work site assessments to identify hazards and locate existing overhead utilities.
  • Complete job-site cleanup and restoration post-installation to customer and municipal standards.

Customer Interaction:

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers regarding the scope of work, service expectations, and any necessary follow-up.
  • Ensure a positive customer experience through quality workmanship and courteous service.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Accurately document installation details, service tests, and repairs through mobile apps or reporting systems.
  • Submit daily summaries highlighting work completed, issues encountered, and future service needs.


Qualifications:

Experience:

  • 1–3 years of experience in aerial drop installation, telecommunications, or utility fieldwork.
  • Previous exposure to overhead cable systems and working from heights is highly preferred.

Technical Skills:

  • Understanding of copper and fiber-optic cable systems.
  • Skilled in the use of signal meters, aerial lifts, pole climbing gear, and splicing tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret pole maps, work orders, and telecom schematics.

Safety Awareness:

  • Familiarity with aerial safety protocols, including fall protection, ladder/bucket use, and pole-loading evaluations.
  • Knowledge of NESC and OSHA safety standards for working aloft and near energized lines.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and heights.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and climbing poles/working on ladders or lifts for extended periods.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • 100% willingness to travel and work on the road as needed for project locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications in aerial installation, fiber optics, or OSHA safety training.
  • Experience using bucket trucks and aerial lift devices.
  • Knowledge of aerial plant construction and maintenance best practices.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • $20–25/hr install rate
  • $16/hr travel rate
