Position Summary

The Childcare Specialist supports families experiencing homelessness by creating a nurturing, safe, and developmentally appropriate environment for children residing at Dakota Woodlands. This role ensures children are supervised, engaged in enriching activities, and cared for in alignment with trauma-informed and age-appropriate practices. The Childcare Specialist plays a key role in maintaining a structured daily program, assisting parents, and supporting the goals of the Housing and Supportive Services team.

Primary Responsibilities

Child Engagement & Supervision

  • Provide active supervision and care for children ages 012 while parents attend meetings, work, or complete goals.
  • Plan and lead age-appropriate educational, recreational, and enrichment activities.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed environment that supports social-emotional development.
  • Guide childrens behavior using positive reinforcement and redirection strategies.

Curriculum & Program Planning

  • Develop and implement a flexible daily curriculum that includes structured activities, free play, rest time, and learning opportunities.
  • Adjust programming based on age, interests, and needs of the children present.
  • Collaborate with staff to incorporate themes such as literacy, health, art, and social-emotional learning.

Safety, Cleanliness, and Organization

  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of the childcare area at all times.
  • Perform regular cleaning and sanitizing of toys, equipment, and surfaces in compliance with health guidelines.
  • Monitor supplies and communicate replenishment needs to the supervisor.

Documentation & Communication

  • Record attendance and maintain accurate child engagement logs.
  • Enter data for tracking and reporting purposes, including client participation, incidents, and observations.
  • Communicate with parents and case managers regarding childrens progress or concerns.

Collaboration & Support

  • Work closely with the Director of Housing and Supportive Services and other program staff to support family goals.
  • Participate in team meetings, staff training, and agency events as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining a welcoming, respectful, and supportive space for all families.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; coursework or degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 12 years of experience working with children in a structured care or educational setting.
  • Knowledge of child development, positive behavior support, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Ability to engage children across age groups with creativity, patience, and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Must pass DHS background check and meet training requirements.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time - Core hours: Monday Friday, 10:00 AM 6:00 PM (Flexibility Required); occasional evening and weekend work for events.
  • Work primarily performed at the front desk in a client-centered environment.
  • Requires sitting or standing for extended periods and light cleaning duties.
  • May involve lifting items up to 25 pounds.
  • Exposure to sensitive situations requiring empathy and professionalism.
  • Regular use of computers and telecommunication equipment.
