The intern will report to the Associate Director of Botanical Collections, Conservation and Research, but will work under the direct supervision of the Desert Garden Manager and Curator of Desert Collections. The position will work no more than 32 hours per week and have a duration between 5-8 weeks, with a flexible start date./pp/ppS/he/they will demonstrate a background of working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach. /pp/ppbEssential Duties/b/pullipAssists Curator of Desert Collections and Desert Garden Manager, under direct supervision, by watering, grooming, mulching, and replanting.  /p/lilipAssists Curator of Desert Collections or Succulent Plant Propagator by transplanting, grooming, fertilizing, and weeding in the Desert Collections Nurseries./p/lilipMust adhere to written safety policy, following all precautions and directions in use of equipment and chemicals./p/lilipMust complete a one-page final report and give a brief presentation to the CSSA Board of Directors at the conclusion of the internship./p/lilipMay be asked to assist with inventory or data entry related to the Desert Collections./p/lilipMay be asked to perform duties in other areas of the Huntington Botanical Gardens as needed./p/lilipOther duties as assigned./p/li/ulp/ppbCandidate Requirements and Experience /b/ppKnowledge, skills, and abilities:/pullipMust be currently enrolled in a college-level program studying Horticulture, Plant Science, Landscape Design, or related field./p/lilipMust be able to work independently without constant supervision./p/lilipKnowledge of cacti and succulents a plus./p/lilipExperience working with plants is essential./p/lilipExperience with horticulture and plant propagation preferred./p/lilipPreference given to current students or recent graduates./p/li/ulp/ppbWorking Conditions  /b/ppWork will be primarily outdoors, split between the Desert Collections Nursery and the Desert Garden.  Garden work will require awareness and avoidance of potential hazards inherent in a public garden.  Appropriate attire for the tasks assigned may include long pants and sleeves, close-toed, sturdy shoes and hat.
