Job Description
Automotive Insurance Company is seeking Staff Counsel to join its growing legal team. This is an in-office position (not remote) based in the company’s office located in Birmingham, MI.
The Staff Counsel will manage a broad array of legal responsibilities across multiple business functions, including contract drafting and management, regulatory compliance, product development, and data privacy and security. The successful candidate will collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to provide practical legal advice and effectively manage business risks. The Staff Counsel will report directly to the General Counsel.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to Subpoenas directed to the company.
- Assist in litigation management as required, with occasional appearances as a company representative.
- Draft and assist on communications with regulatory agencies.
- Assist in Rate/Rule/Form filings.
- Assist in preparation of regulatory filings.
- Draft, review, and advise on contracts across all functional areas including commercial agreements, vendor agreements, business associate agreements, SaaS, and other contracts that arise.
- Research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of statutes, case law, and industry trends related to auto insurers.
- Assist in collecting and maintaining agent agreements.
- Assist in maintaining business records.
- Assist in due diligence efforts.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements:
- J.D. from an ABA accredited law school with licensure to practice and member of good standing with the Michigan State Bar.
- Minimum of five years at a law firm or in-house position with preventative counseling and litigation experience.
- Knowledge and experience with litigation management.
- In-depth knowledge of the Michigan Insurance Code, DIFS Administrative Rules, and legislation related to insurance.
- Familiarity with NAIC regulations and guidelines a plus.
- Familiarity with Rate/Rule/Form filings a strong preference.
- Knowledge of privacy laws is a plus.
- Knowledge of reinsurance is a plus but not a requirement.
- Proven experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of contracts.
- Self-starter mentality and comfortable working through ambiguity.
- Work well within a team where no task is to big or small and readily willing to assist and support our business units and partners.
- Ability to effectively engage with a variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently on routine matters in a fast-paced environment but seeks guidance and supervision on complex issues.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
- Strong time management skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Strong computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft office, Excel, Lexis products.
