Job Description
Position Title: Medical Director – Hospitalist Program
Location: Community Hospital
Hospital Size: 200 Licensed Beds
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Hospitalist Medical Director to lead the hospital medicine team at our 200-bed inner city community hospital. This is a full-time position that includes both clinical and administrative responsibilities in a supportive, collegial environment with a collaborative medical staff and leadership team.
Hospitalist Program StructureStaffing Model (Restructuring Underway):
2 Physician Shifts Daily:
Day: 6:30 AM – 6:30 PM
Night: 6:30 PM – 6:30 AM
1 APC Shift Daily: 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Total of 36 hours of daily hospitalist coverage
ICU Status: Closed ICU
ICU Coverage:
Tele-ICU coverage from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Hospitalists are responsible for:
Intubations
Central lines (rare; vascular surgery available on-site 8 AM – 4 PM and often assists)
24-hour anesthesia availability for backup
Clinical Commitment: 12 clinical shifts per month
Administrative Time: 40 hours/month
Time Off: 5 weeks Paid Time Off (PTO)
Compensation: Inclusive of medical director stipend

Provide direct inpatient care as part of the hospitalist team
Oversee and optimize day-to-day operations of the hospitalist program
Serve as the clinical and operational liaison between hospital administration and hospitalist staff
Ensure quality, safety, and compliance standards are met
Participate in performance improvement and case review initiatives
Facilitate staffing and schedule oversight in collaboration with administrative leadership
Mentor hospitalists and APCs, promoting professional development and engagement
Coordinate with specialists and ancillary services to improve care delivery
Board Certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
Minimum of 3–5 years hospitalist experience, with prior leadership experience preferred
Strong communication and team-building skills
Comfortable with ICU-level care, including airway management and procedures
Familiar with Tele-ICU operations and collaborative specialty care
Location: Surrounding area - Essex County: Newark, East Orange, Orange, Irvington
12 Clinical Shifts per month
40 hours administrative time per month
Must Lead 1-2 committees (1 being peer review committee)
