DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Director of Safety's primary responsibility is to promote and manage a safe working environment for all employees. They will also work with each organization unit to ensure they are aware of and comply with all company safety policies. They will also work with all employees to ensure the company complies with applicable health and safety laws. They will also be responsible for establishing policies that will create and maintain a safe workplace.
As a Director of Safety, they must have excellent attention to detail to identify hazards. They will also discover opportunities for improving conditions and execute various safety programs. They must possess the ability to communicate in multiple mediums (written and verbal) all safety policies, guidelines, and processes to a multidisciplinary workforce in varied regions.
The goal is to ensure the workplace meets all legal expectations and actively supports occupational health and safety.
Travel for this position will be 50%-80%.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide expertise for all levels of leadership regarding environmental, safety, health issues and applicable regulations
- Advise and assist all levels of leadership in implementing, managing, and auditing within the framework of an innovative Health and Safety Management System in a construction setting
- Lead and manage the non-DOT driver process, DOT driver qualification program, and ensure compliance with DOT guidelines and insurance expectations.
- Be an active figure in shifting our safety culture from rules and regulatory compliance to a safety culture developed as a behavior driven value at all levels of the organization
- Provide oversight expertise for incident investigations, development of corrective plans and follow-up actions to prevent recurrence
- Ensure timely reporting and claims management for workers compensation, general liability, and automotive liability
- Lead company insurance renewal process, monitoring, and the ongoing relationship with the vendor
- Work to develop and standardize work processes, standards, and equipment
- Influence leadership decisions to positively impact the outcome of safety and business
- Communicate frequently and consistently with operational leadership, CFO and General Counsel on areas of concern and performance metrics
- Work closely with regional leadership to develop programs and plans as required
- Assist individual locations with completion of goals and objectives as well as training verification
- Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions in regional offices and on job sites
- Report on health and safety awareness, issues, and statistics
- Responsible for writing and updating corporate safety manual and site-specific safety plans
- Manage external safety consultants
- Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Master's Degree in Safety Management or related field and 2 years of experience in Environmental, Health and Safety leadership ~OR~
- Bachelor's Degree in Safety Management or related field and 4 years of experience in Environmental, Health and Safety leadership ~OR~
- Associates Degree in Safety Management or related field and 6 years of experience in Environmental, Health and Safety leadership ~OR~
- High School Diploma and 8 years of experience in Environmental, Health and Safety leadership.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Nationally recognized Safety and Health Certifications (ASP, CSP, CIH).
- Bilingual (English and Spanish).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITION
- Climb, crawl, and walk while carrying or operating machinery and tools upstairs, downstairs, and over potentially uneven surfaces.
- Lift, pull, push, and carry 80 lbs. of weight intermittently.
- Ability to identify safety hazards and communicate effectively with others.
- Sustain the stamina to perform manual labor outdoors, exposed to the elements, vibrations, loud noises, offensive smells, dust, dirt, and water in all seasons, including extreme temperatures.
- Safely perform work with appropriate safety gear.
- Distinguish between different colors.
- Bend, squat, twist, and reach in various positions as the situation dictates.
