Job Description
Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN)
The ED RN applies nursing theory, technical skills, and communication to deliver compassionate care in urgent and emergent situations. The ED RN assesses patient needs, prioritizes care, collaborates on interventions, and evaluates progress. They are skilled in both invasive and non-invasive procedures, and use relationship-based care principles to reduce anxiety, provide information, and address pain/discomfort while ensuring patient safety. The ED RN also assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients across all age groups and their families.
Key Responsibilities:
Triage & Assessment: Establish rapport with patients and families during triage, prioritizing care according to Triage Standards (ESI training). Listen actively, observe nonverbal cues, and provide updates.
Critical & Secondary Assessments: Conduct primary assessments to detect deviations from normal, document findings, and identify appropriate interventions. Reassess patients to track responses to treatment or condition changes.
Team Collaboration: Build trust and cooperation with team members for optimal patient outcomes. Delegate tasks appropriately and follow infection prevention protocols.
Patient Education & Discharge Planning: Prepare patients and families for procedures, make referrals for post-care, and provide discharge instructions tailored to individual learning styles.
Healing Environment: Acknowledge the importance of the patient and family, keeping them informed throughout their ED visit, anticipating their needs, and maintaining clear communication.
