Assist orthopedic surgeons with the treatment of orthopedic injuries and diseases.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist orthopedic surgeons and other allied healthcare professionals with the treatment of orthopedic injuries and diseases such as fractures, sprains and strains.
  • Apply, adjust and remove a variety of casts, splints and bandages.
  • Measure and fit patients for orthopedic and DME devices.
  • Clean and dress wounds.
  • Remove sutures, pins and wires.
  • Set up, operate and maintain various types of traction equipment.
  • Provide information and instruction to patients and their families regarding treatment plans.
  • Instruct patient in proper care of cast.
  • Sterilize or coordinate the sterilization of all instruments and medical supplies.
  • Stock and keep inventory of medical supplies.
  • Perform other responsibilities associated with this position as deemed appropriate.

GENERAL COMPENTENCIES DESIRED

· Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.

· Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

· Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions based upon a basis understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another.

· Ability to apply, adjust and remove all common orthopedic devices.

· Must be a team player and have flexibility and patience to work with any physician or other allied healthcare professional.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patents, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 30 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

CREDENTIALS DESIRED

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent education, at least one year of related experience working with patients in a surgical practice or prior experience supporting surgeons and physicians. Completion of an orthopedic technology training program and certification by the National Association of Orthopedic Technologists must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.
