About this job
The Ando Lab in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University investigates how enzymes function and evolve by developing and applying advanced structural biology tools. Our research focuses on how protein motions enable complex behaviors such as catalysis and regulation. We study proteins of evolutionary significance – including enzymes that use metallocofactors to catalyze chemically challenging reactions – as well as those with intricate allosteric mechanisms. The lab is a tight-knit, interdisciplinary group committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. We are currently seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented technician to support two key initiatives in the lab.p style="text-align:inherit"nbsp; nbsp;/ppspanThe lab technician will contribute to a new multi-institutional effort aimed at building the infrastructure to make protein dynamics – derived from diffuse X-ray scattering – publicly accessible alongside traditional static structural data. The primary responsibility of this role will be to produce high-quality protein samples and crystals to generate benchmark datasets for the broader structural biology community. In parallel, the technician will support ongoing research by assisting lab members in the expression and purification of challenging enzymes for advanced structural and functional studies. Some of these enzymes are oxygen-sensitive, but no prior experience with anaerobic techniques is required – training will be provided. This is a professional staff position with well-defined responsibilities that requires a high degree of reliability, organization, and professionalism. At the same time, the technician will receive mentoring and support and gain valuable hands-on experience in research. /span/pp/ppspanWhile position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others. /span/pp/ppbspanThis benefits eligible position is an on-site full-time (39 hours per week) 12-month appointment with the possibility for extension, depending on available funding and successful performance./span/b/pp/ppbspanRequired Qualifications: /span/b/pulliAssociate’s degree in biochemistry or a related field and up to 2 years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination./liliExperience with protein purification techniques, including affinity, size-exclusion, and ion-exchange chromatography./liliExperience with molecular cloning methods such as Gibson assembly, site-directed mutagenesis, and PCR./liliExperience with bacterial cell culture work./liliExperience with DNA work, including plasmid extraction, sequencing, primer design./liliProficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite tools./liliStrong organizational, communication, and documentation skills; attention to detail; and the ability to learn new skills and manage multiple tasks./liliInterest in structural biology or biophysics research./liliStrong commitment to scientific rigor, safety, and collegiality./liliExperience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities. /li/ulp/ppbPreferred Qualifications: /b/pulliSome experience in research setting after college (e.g., an internship)./liliFamiliarity with some biophysical characterization techniques./liliFamiliarity with biological databases such as the Protein Data Bank (PDB), proteomics resources, and basic bioinformatics tools./li/ulp/ppbThe anticipated start date is November 1, 2025.
