Position and Qualifications

The Department of Gender & Women’s Studies (GWS) educates and empowers students through a vibrant, interdisciplinary network of courses, hands-on and study-away experiences, and leadership training. Students are earnest, highly motivated, and deeply invested in community care. GWS graduates have found careers in politics and law, healthcare and science, and the arts and have found success in graduate and professional schools. GWS faculty have a collaborative spirit and are active at all levels of the university. Students are supported through mentoring, advising, and experiential learning opportunities, as well as from each other through professional development and intellectual community.

This position carries a teaching load of six courses per academic year or equivalent, and the new faculty member must be prepared to teach introductory and advanced courses within GWS. Candidates are sought who can demonstrate an excellent record of teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate level, as well as the potential to contribute to the expansion of undergraduate courses and research opportunities in GWS and in the general education curriculum. Additional duties include service to the department and university, programming for student recruitment and retention, advising, and curriculum and community development.

The successful candidate for this tenure-track position will be broadly trained in gender, women’s, sexuality, or feminist studies or a closely related field. A scholar-teacher familiar with feminist theoretical frameworks is needed for exploring the complexities of identity, discourse, corporeality, and embodiment within pluralistic cultural, social, and political contexts, as well as with research and teaching methods that center identifying and understanding historically underrepresented or marginalized voices. Candidates for this position must hold either a Ph.D. in Gender, Women’s, Sexuality, or Feminist Studies (GWSFS) or a Ph.D. in a closely related field (e.g., cultural or area studies) or an applied field with a graduate minor or certificate in GWSFS. ABD candidates are welcome to apply, but the Ph.D. must be in hand by July 1, 2026.

A demonstrated record of scholarly research and/or creative work and an agenda for continual engagement within the field of Gender and Women’s Studies are required. Applicants must have experience with transnational and diasporic feminisms, queer of color critique, comparative critical race theory, and/or post/decolonial studies. Candidates’ content and geographic area of focus should complement and expand current GWS offerings.

Preferred candidates will have a history of significant and direct experience working with students of a variety of backgrounds. Experience preparing students for leadership opportunities and career success in a global society and working within a collaborative environment are also highly valuable to the department.
