Job Description
Purpose of the position
The Handyman/Gardener will support the organization by performing routine maintenance, light repairs, lawn care, gardening, and assisting with event setup as needed. This role requires a dependable, detail-oriented individual who can work independently and adapt to varying weekly needs.
Essential functions
- Perform light repairs and general facility maintenance to ensure a safe and functional environment
- Maintain outdoor spaces, including mowing, trimming, weeding, watering, and general landscaping
- Complete seasonal gardening tasks such as planting, mulching, and cleanup
- Assist with event setup and breakdown, including moving furniture, equipment, and supplies
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities and grounds to identify maintenance needs
- Report major repair needs or safety concerns to management

- Familiarity with lawn care tools, gardening equipment, and basic repair techniques
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to safely operate and maintain tools, equipment, and supplies
Work environment
This position is based in the Abingdon, Virginia office.
Physical demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Position type and expected hours of work
Employee should be able to work a part-time shift between the core business hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Employee should be able to work shifts of no less than 10 and no more than 20 hours per week.

Certificates, licenses, registrations required
- Valid driver's license and automobile insurance
Required education and experience
- Prior experience in general maintenance, handyman services, or gardening
- Five or more years of supervisory experience and progressively responsible experience in an educational, nonprofit or social service organization
- Ability to travel independently to and from worksite
