Purpose of the Position
Responsible for set-up and operation of CNC machines in compliance with inch and metric drawing specifications. Responsible for the proper use and maintenance of all measuring tools and devices used in inspection of all components. Assists lower-level machinist and operators with the operation and troubleshooting of equipment. Assigns workflow to team members to ensure customer deadlines are met. Works under general supervision.
Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other ThorLabs locations.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
- Performs set ups on various CNC Production Equipment such as milling, turning or similar operations.
- Machines and/or fabricating precision tools and fixturing to tight tolerances and complex geometries based on specifications.
- Understands material properties (rates of expansion, strength, hardness) and special machining requirements.
- Measures, inspects and troubleshoots dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications.
- Coordinates workflow in production including issues with production orders, locating job specific material, locating cutting tools and issuing appropriate gauges for each production order.
- Troubleshoots setups throughout the department to keep equipment functioning at full capacity.
- Responsible for the overall quality being produced in the production area.
- Trains and instructs lower-level machinists and operators to ensure maximum output of each work center.
- Completes routine and priority tasks defined by management to ensure on time deliveries.
- Comply with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areas.
Physical Activities: Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools.

Qualifications
Experience:
- Minimum 4-5 years of experience in a similar position preferred plus training in CNC Programming
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience
- CNC certification or CNC Trade School, a major plus
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Solid understanding of mechanical design and dimensioning principles which includes reading blueprints and geometric tolerances comprehension.
- Demonstrates a high level of knowledge in programming and overall machine operation.
- Experience with Haas and Fanuc controls.
- Understanding of Virtual Gibbs and manual programming (G codes/M codes).
- Familiar with the operation of DNC systems.
- Knowledge of Lean Principles including “Just in Time”, and Setup Time Reduction a plus
- Prototyping experience a plus • Strong sense of ownership and work ethic, written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient computer skills is a must
- Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
- Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.
Hourly pay range for this position is $24.70 - $30.90 depending on experience
