Environmental Scientist/Geologist I

Summary/Objective


The Sci/Geo/Eng I is an individual contributor who works independently with limited supervision, seeking guidance from senior staff or the Project Manager as needed. This role supports the project team in increasingly complex activities across the project lifecycle, prioritizes tasks effectively, and manages assigned responsibilities proactively. While decisions may be reviewed for overall impact, they are typically accepted.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and/or supervise on-site environmental assessments, including field sampling of air, groundwater, soil, and building materials for potential contaminants.
  • Plan and prepare for field activities, including site reconnaissance, mapping, permitting, and obtaining off-site access permissions.
  • Oversee third-party contractors and coordinate health and safety measures in accordance with project and regulatory standards.
  • Collect, document, and analyze field data to support the development of technical reports and regulatory documentation.
  • Assist in the preparation of draft reports, regulatory forms, and site plans.
  • Support project managers and senior staff on complex project tasks and contribute to problem-solving for both long- and short-term environmental challenges.
  • Participate in cross-training of technicians and contribute to knowledge-sharing across teams.
  • Maintain and enhance professional skills through continued education, industry networking, and adherence to safety guidelines and standards.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • A relevant technical diploma or university degree with 1–3 years of experience in the oil and gas or environmental industry; candidates without a diploma/degree may qualify with an additional 2 years of directly applicable work experience.
  • Field experience in oil and gas or related industries is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and solve increasingly complex problems with minimal supervision.
  • Applies technical knowledge and experience to effectively complete tasks and overcome field or project execution challenges.
  • Builds and refines knowledge across multiple disciplines, including civil, construction, process, mechanical, and IT, while supporting functions such as engineering, EHS, project controls, and supply chain management.
  • Understands remediation methods and technical environmental topics relevant to fieldwork and project execution.
  • Collaborates effectively with cross-functional project teams and participates in planning and executing interface activities.
  • Strong ability to prioritize tasks and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Note: Prior experience will be evaluated at the time of hire and may be credited toward role expectations based on its nature and relevance.

Work Environment

This role operates in both field and office settings. Approximately 80/20 split between field and office. Fieldwork may expose the employee to extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, and varying temperatures. The role routinely involves the use of PPE and safety equipment and may require handling contaminated samples.



Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work as job duties demand. Flexibility in scheduling may be required based on job-specific needs and occasional overtime required.



Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, or related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in the oil and gas industry or environmental field.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Experience as a Geologist, Engineer, or Scientist in the Environmental industry.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Experience working with State Regulations and related entities.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Remediation.
  • Project management experience

Work Authorization/Security Clearance (if applicable)

Employee must be authorized to work in the United States and must possess a valid driver’s license.
