Summary:    

The Seasonal Equipment Operator/ Laborer receives detailed instructions before and during work to perform a variety of highway maintenance duties. Caution must be exercised in operating highway maintenance equipment in order to prevent damage to equipment or injury to employees and the motoring public.


Position is not eligible for a modified or hybrid work schedule. 


Relationships:

    Works either independently or with a crew of employees.  

    Frequent contact with the motoring public, Indiana State Police and other ITR department personnel.  


Responsibilities:

    Performs all tasks safely, complies with all internal and external safety requirements, supports ITRCC's safety culture, attends all safety trainings, and completes all compliance trainings as required by ITRCC.

    Upholds ITRCC’s core values: Community, Actions, Reliability, Excellence and Safety (CARES).

    Performs similar maintenance activities as full time labor positions provide the incumbent is properly trained. 

    Complete pre-trip vehicle inspection. 

    Periodic assignment as a patrol vehicle for incident response and motorist aid. 

    Check vehicle and fuel at the end of shift.

    Participates in snow and ice operations. 

    Fix signs and guardrail. 

    Pick up trash and debris. 

    Conduct inventory of supplies. 

    Required to maintain fleet vehicles and equipment to an acceptable standard and to operate in a safe an efficient manner. 

    Complete all training that is required. 

    All other duties as assigned.


Qualifications: (required)    

    High school diploma/ GED

    Forklift certification.

    CPR certified

    Ability to read and understand measurements

    Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement 


Desirable Experience:

    1-2 years of general roadwork experience

    Previous snow plowing experience

    Working knowledge of highway maintenance practices 

    Certificate in welding, bucket truck, back hoe and forklift



Working Conditions: 

    This position requires: (Frequent est. 5 hrs per shift)

    Frequent standing, walking and sitting

    Frequent talking and hearing

    Heavy physical effort

    Minor computer usage

    Being exposed to weather elements daily (hot and cold)

    Travel time required up to 20%
