    SUMMARY OF POSITION:
    The primary responsibility for the Instructional Assistant is direct involvement with students in the instructional setting. Job duties range from supporting students in the classroom to supplementing regular classroom curriculum with additional enrichment activities for students, to assisting with self help and self management skills.  This position will deal with community members, parents, students and staff on a regular basis and will be expected to interact with these publics in a professional, friendly, and organized manner.

    $17/hour

     
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Must meet all Indiana requirements as a highly qualified Instructional Assistant.
    • Two years of college or the equivalent is required in order to provide instruction to a student or a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment. 
    • Teaching license and/or educational training and experience preferred.

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    1. Provide instruction assistance to students with direction and guidance of teacher and/or facilitator
    2. Work with individual students or small groups for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts
    3. Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans for the students and monitor their progress
    4. Provide supervision and support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities
    5. Work with other professionals, such as speech therapists, social workers, occupational and physical therapists
    6. Assist classroom teachers with documenting and maintaining student records including data collection methods
    7. Support students with emotional or behavior concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills
    8. Support students who are on a non-diploma track due to the disabilities of the class having a more intense need
    9. Utilize de-escalation strategies to prevent behaviors that could be harmful to self or others
    10. Be a part of the crisis team for the classroom and building to support appropriate Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)
    11. Perform health related student needs as trained by the nurse in the building.
    12. Perform utility needs associated with students’ needs for bathroom usage, changing of clothing due to soiling, or other needs associated with the physical well-being of the students
    13. Support escorting throughout the building and to and from the bus as necessary
    14. Assist in classroom management
    15. Assist in regular communication with families regarding student progress
    16. Assist with the administration and scoring of student assessments
    17. Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment
    18. Assist teacher with administrative records and preparation of required reports
    19. Function as an appropriate role model for children, providing proper examples, emotional support, and a friendly attitude and general guidance
    20. Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving student safety concerns and reporting those concerns to direct supervisor
    21. Keep teacher and/or reading specialist informed of special needs or problems of individual students
    22. Attend staff meetings and/or after school functions when directed by director or administrator
    23. Complete other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the director, building administrator or administrator designee

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is protected from outside weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. There are no environmental hazards indicated for this position.
     
    Equipment: This position is required to maintain a working knowledge of all classroom equipment.  A basic knowledge of operations for computers, printers, telephone systems, fax machines and copiers is required.
     
    Hours: This position is typically expected to work an average of 5.75 hours or less per day. No more than 180 days per year. Hours/days may be adjusted per the direct supervisor to assure adequate coverage to meet the demands of the school and job. 
     
    Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Be capable of physically assisting students with disabilities as required in some possible assignments (positioning, lifting, transferring, restraining, etc.).
