Mechanical Engineer - Tool Design
Location: Bristol, RI
Pay: $95,000 – $115,000 (Depending on experience)
Summary
Our client is seeking a Mechanical Engineer, Tool Design, to join their Engineering Team. This role focuses on the design of fixtures and tooling, providing detailed manufacturing drawings and layout support for engineering projects. The position is purely design-focused (not fabrication or maintenance) and requires strong expertise in creating manufacturable tooling solutions that meet fit, form, function, and manufacturability designs.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Assist with feasibility assessments for new products.
- Review new part numbers for moldability and perform preliminary mold layouts.
- Collaborate with internal teams to gather information needed for tooling and fixture design.
- Create mold designs using Cimatron or SolidWorks 3D modeling software.
- Provide tool layout drawings and electronic files for fabrication processes such as CNC machining, wire EDM, etc.
- Apply design-for-manufacturability principles with a focus on minimizing secondary operations, ensuring fit, form, function, safety, and ergonomics.
- Produce bills of materials for new mold designs.
- Partner with the Tool Room team on manufacturing strategies, including complex tooling components.
- Assist in managing tooling jobs, including ordering materials and components.
- Maintain engineering drawing controls.
- Support general tool building and design projects as required.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Adhere to all applicable quality and safety standards.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by management.
Education, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in tooling and fixture design; injection molding experience is a plus
- Strong knowledge of design for assembly, including feature sizing and tolerances.
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM technology, specifically Cimatron Mold Design/CAM Software and SolidWorks.
- Familiarity with SolidWorks Finite Element Analysis (FEA) preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong blueprint interpretation skills, tolerance specifications knowledge, and GD&T expertise.
- Excellent organizational, time management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Lean manufacturing experience a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Working knowledge of OSHA safety regulations.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and work on your feet for extended periods
Work Environment & Schedule
Full-time, onsite role.
Standard schedule: Monday–Friday, 40 hours/week.
Overtime available on Fridays and weekends as needed.
