Travel: 85-100% This position requires extensive travel.

Summary: Railway Boom Truck Operators work primarily in our Track Maintenance department. REMCAN’s Track Maintenance department is responsible for all railway track maintenance and construction projects, from new track construction to emergency repairs. The Boom Truck Operator role involves operating Boom Trucks on track to distribute rail and ties, pull rail cars, pick up track material, and more.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Use of boom to distribute rail and ties and to pull rail cars.
- Use of magnet on boom truck to pick up track material.
- Work with track crews/gangs to provide track maintenance and repairs.
- Perform moderate to heavy physical labor, building and maintaining the track and surrounding materials.
- Use of hand and power tools to provide track maintenance and repairs.
- Responding to emergencies and track outages (on-call).
- Maintain REMCAN policies and guidelines at all times.
Qualifications:
- Ability to operate 18-speed manual transmission.
- Mechanically inclined, able to troubleshoot repairs.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
- Ability to produce a current 3-year driver’s abstract.
- Pass eRailSafe workforce compliance system.
- Complete pre-employment medical which includes screening for alcohol and drugs.
- First Aid and previous safety training are considered assets.
- Demonstrate an ability to work unsupervised, as well as in teams.
- Work all types of shifts as required, including weekends and night shifts.
- Work in various weather conditions all year round.
- Travel to remote work locations as required.
Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma/GED preferred
- Minimum 2 years railway or construction experience
- Military Experience would be an asset
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Due to the Safety Sensitive nature of this position, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate while performing the duties of this job. The employee must regularly lift and/or move heavy weights. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and may be required to work nights, holidays, and weekends. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. May be exposed to live track/trains and high voltage. Exposure to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
