Job Title:Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum Exhibitions AssistantDepartment:Libraries | Special Collections and Area Studies

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum (BICLM) houses the world’s largest collection of comics and cartoon art material. The museum’s three galleries showcase exhibitions focused on the history and artistry of comics and cartoon art.

The BICLM Exhibitions Assistant provides research, organizational, and collections support for an upcoming exhibition, partially funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art. Working closely with the Senior Museum Coordinator, Curators, and other members of the BICLM Exhibitions Team, the assistant helps manage all stages of exhibition development and preparation.

Key responsibilities include locating, moving, and preparing artwork and collection materials from storage; creating and maintaining detailed exhibition checklists, including digitization, metadata, and image tracking; and providing research and fact-checking to ensure accuracy of exhibition content. The assistant also supports workflow coordination across curatorial, conservation, and digitization teams, tracks items requiring conservation review, and communicates conservation needs to appropriate staff. Additional duties may include assisting with exhibition planning, preparation, and installation.

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in art, art history, museum studies, arts administration, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of one year of experience working in special collections, libraries, or museums
  • Strong research, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including curators, educators, grant advisors, and community members
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and digital communication platforms (e.g., MS Teams, Zoom)

Desired:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in comics and cartoon art history
  • Experience handling original artwork and special collections materials
  • Experience working with collections databases
  • Experience digitizing art and library materials
  • Proficiency with the Adobe Create Suite
  • Familiarity with Airtable
Additional Information:

This is a part-time, temporary position (approximately 24 weeks) supporting the development of an exhibition scheduled to open in May 2026. The position requires 15–20 hours per week, scheduled during standard weekday business hours (Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., first shift).
