About the Department
The employee in this position will teach employability skills, administer appropriate tests and provide counseling to help prisoner students prepare for   employment when released. Most of the work week is spent in direct supervision of prisoners within the perimeters of a correctional facility. This position will assist in overseeing the delivery of Employment Readiness programming and will teach employment/release preparation skills to qualified prisoners that reflect current and future labor market trends. Areas of instruction will include: Job Searching and Workplace Skills, Financial Literacy and Introductory Computer Skills. This position will work closely with the facility employment counselor. The purpose of the program is to equip students with entry level job skills that can lead to job placement in the community upon release.

Possession of an associate's degree in an area of the specific trade or occupation to be taught.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of an appropriate bachelor's degree, master's degree, or vocational teacher certification may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.
 
 OR
 
 Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and four years of recent experience in the practice of the specific trade or occupation (Employment Readiness) to be taught, including six months of experience training others in the trade or occupation (Employment Readiness) may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.   The four years of experience must include one or more of the following areas related to preparing prisoners for eventual release and employment:  experience in computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, or other word processing, spreadsheet, desktop publishing, presentation, or web-based programs) and coaching others in job preparatory skills involving computer usage; using a computer for resume and cover letter writing, employment search and submitting on-line applications; OR experience in recruitment, job development, applicant selection, marketing job programs, and/or matching job seekers to employers may substitute for the education and experience requirements.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.  All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
