About the Department
Purpose Of Position

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Pothole Maintenance. The position requires manual labor, which will be completed alone or as part of a crew. You will perform a variety of manual tasks and activities, i.e, pothole repairs, picking up debris, and investigating reports of dangerous conditions in the road. conning and barricading work zones, etc. Work includes planning on-site work, maintenance, cleaning, and servicing equipment, emergency needs, vehicles, tools, and the work area. Inspect vehicles for required supplies, materials and equipment. Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at work sites. Work will be reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observations, reports, and results obtained, delivery of services, motivation, coaching, and mentoring. Report to work during all significant weather events or random incidents. 


  • ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    1. Generates monthly performance reports, develops and maintains various records and reports, utilizes a computer system or table for work orders, memos, reports and other correspondences as required, and prepares daily team performance reports. 
    2. Inputs, manages, and utilizes inspections and other data and communications using the City Works database and Geographic Information Systems GIS.  
    3. Pothole Maintenance performs preventive maintenance, inspections, routine service, and minor repairs on roadway and equipment.
    4. The position requires the operation of an asphalt reclaimer, backhoe, roller, 1-ton flat bed, 5-ton flat bed and plate tamper, as well as the operation of hand tools and various additional equipment associated with activities, including both Asphalt (cold and hot). 
    5. Maintains a safe work area, including placing and removing cones, barricades, warning devices, and/or directing traffic at work sites to ensure the safety of the work crew and the public; cleans up work sites upon completion of the job; picks up all tools and equipment; secures the job site if retuning later; washes vehicles and equipment as needed.; cleans up shop areas; maintain tools and equipment in safe and operable conditions; safely uses, mixes, and dilutes all chemicals according to direction labels; and when operating motor vehicles, observes safe driving principles and practices 
    6. Oten works alone, occasionally works with a crew. Responsible for managing and scheduling work on an Ipad from the work order system, Cityworks. Responsible for time management and assigned project management. 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma or GED preferred. Must have one (1) year of experience in manual labor. Experience in construction, maintenance, or repairs of roadways, bridges, and operating heavy equipment and light construction equipment, or closely related experience, is preferred. A combination of education, experience, or training that has prepared the incumbent to perform the essential duties of the position preferred. Must have a Texas Class “C” Driver’s License and a good driving record throughout the length of employment. A valid class "B" Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement is preferred. Must have a strong work ethic and be able to manage time to meet deadlines

The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description.
