The Pharmacy Technician provides pharmacological support services by stocking, assembling and distributing medications for the care of the patient consistent with the prescriptions/orders of a provider. The Pharmacy Technician demonstrates excellence in customer service during interactions with patients, families, and other customers and works collaboratively with colleagues and departments throughout the organization to provide optimal outcomes for our patients in a compassionate, professional, ethical, and knowledgeable fashion. The Pharmacy Technician is aware of the potential exposure to internal and external hazardous materials.
Klickitat Valley Health is a rural, critical-access hospital located in scenic Goldendale, Washington, only two hours from Portland along the breathtaking Columbia River Gorge. KVH offers emergency and acute inpatient care and a full scope of ancillary services, including General Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory, Respiratory Therapy, PT / OT, Behavioral Health, Dental, Pain Management, and Hospice. Qualifications
Minimum Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications):
Safety Sensitive per WA SB5123: No
Education / Licensure:
- Must be at least 18 years or older
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Current Washington State Pharmacy Technician license/National Pharmacy Technician certification.
- Knowledge/comprehension of basic computer skills required.
Experience:
- One (1) year of recent full-time experience in an outpatient, retail, or acute care pharmacy department required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES (but not limited to):
- Supports the mission, vision and values of the organization.
- Answers phone and/or questions related to pharmacy services and prescription status or floor stock/Pyxis inventory from other staff and providers.
- Maintains pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stock to determine inventory level; places orders for medications and supplies based on anticipated need; verifies receipt of items ordered and removes outdated medications and supplies from inventory; disposes according to hospital procedure and governmental regulation.
- Refills, loads, and unloads medications in the ADD by selecting correct medication and strength.
- Performs monthly inspections of all areas where medications are stored and removes any expired medications, open MDV’s that have not been dated, and any open SDV’s.
- Unit dose’s bulk medications and prepares emergency department take home packs per Washington State guidelines.
- May assemble intravenous solutions and other pharmaceutical therapies as ordered by provider.
- Performs duties in a manner that optimizes patient safety, adheres to infection prevention protocols, and takes precautions to reduce the likelihood of medication/health care errors, is accountable for ensuring patient safety.
- Maintains departmental records by recording and filling provider’s prescriptions/orders; as well as other general department information; may prepare reports as needed to demonstrate departmental activity/volume, charges/revenue generated.
- Files and retrieves various pharmacy records as required
- Operates cash register and related front counter tasks
- Counts, reconstitutes and pours from stock bottles for individual prescriptions
- Enters prescription data into the computer and monitors label printing
- Checks all prescription orders for completeness of information
- Consults with others as appropriate to provide for interdisciplinary approach to patient care; and communicates clearly (both written and verbal) with nursing staff, provider, and other hospital staff to ensure the care needs of the patient are met.
- Follows hospital procedure when disposing of pharmaceutical waste or biohazardous materials with labelling and proper handling of materials.
- Maintains a safe and clean environment that is organized and efficient.
- Complies with all hospital policy and procedures, while upholding the high expectations of KVH.
- Attends 100% of mandatory in-services.
- Attends any other meetings as requested by other departments.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
