Description\n

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg position in an acute care hospital setting, requiring at least 1 year of experience and rotating day/night shifts on a 48-bed unit.

  • Acute care hospital Med/Surg unit with 48 beds
  • \n
  • Common patient diagnoses include pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and falls/weakness
  • \n
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5–7 on days and 1:6–8 on nights
  • \n
  • PCT support available with a ratio of approximately 1:10–12; PCT duties include vitals, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, heart monitor application, bathing, feeding, toileting, and turning/positioning
  • \n
  • Respiratory therapy manages breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow O2; RNs are responsible for monitoring only
  • \n
  • Telemetry monitoring is handled by a dedicated monitor tech on another floor; RNs are not required to read or interpret tele strips
  • \n
  • RNs may titrate drips such as heparin, Bumex, and Lasix; cardiac drip titration is not required
  • \n
  • Charting is done in Epic
  • \n
  • 12-hour rotating day/night shifts (7a–7p / 7p–7a)
  • \n
  • Rotating schedule is structured so RNs are not working days and nights in the same week; typically 2 weeks of days followed by 2 weeks of nights
  • \n
  • Every other weekend required
  • \n
  • No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule is managed by the unit manager with consideration for requested time off
  • \n
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • \n
  • Floating may be required to other Med/Surg, Med/Surg-Tele, or IMC units for lower acuity patients
  • \n
Requirements\n
    \n
  • Active WV or Compact RN license required
  • \n
  • BLS certification required
  • \n
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • \n
  • BSN is not required
  • \n
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
  • \n
  • A copy of an unexpired driver's license is required for consideration
  • \n
  • Any licensing hits must be disclosed at the time of consideration
  • \n

  • 2 references required: 1 supervisor reference and 1 peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN); if the candidate worked a permanent position in the last 12 months, one supervisor reference must be from that facility
  • \n
  • Skills checklist completed within the past year is required
  • \n
  • Orientation consists of 1 day with an educator/computer systems training and 1 day with a preceptor
  • \n
  • RN scrub color is navy blue
  • \n
  • Travelers may be asked to participate in the holiday rotation

  • Travelers are expected to be flexible and help fill gaps in the permanent staff schedule
  • \n

  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible

  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying; cumulative travel experience at WVU facilities is tracked and travelers cannot exceed 1 year total before a 2-year break is required
