This hybrid role combines retail sales support with hands-on mechanical service, assisting customers with product selection, troubleshooting equipment issues, and ensuring merchandise presentation and inventory accuracy. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong product knowledge, mechanical aptitude, and a customer-first mindset, with a solid understanding of lumber, building materials (LBM), and small engine equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
Customer Service & Sales Support:
- Greet and assist customers on the salesfloor, providing knowledgeable guidance on LBM products, millwork, and small engine equipment (e.g., chainsaws, lawn mowers, trimmers).
- Help customers locate items, answer product-related questions, and offer basic troubleshooting advice for small engine issues.
- Diagnose and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on small engine equipment.
- Maintain service logs and communicate repair timelines to customers and management.
- Ensure tools and service areas are clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards.
- Maintain clean, organized, and well-stocked displays of both retail and small engine products.
- Ensure products are properly tagged, priced, and presented according to company standards.
- Communicate stock levels, product movement, and customer needs to the Inventory Manager.
- Assist with restocking and product rotation to support inventory accuracy and availability.
- Work closely with outside sales, cashiering, warehouse, and service teams to ensure smooth customer transactions and order fulfillment.
- Stay informed on product specifications, applications, and industry trends in both LBM and small engine equipment.
- Participate in training sessions to enhance product expertise, mechanical skills, and customer service capabilities.
- Maintain a safe and organized salesfloor and service area.
- Follow company safety protocols and assist in identifying and resolving potential hazards.
- Support resolution of customer concerns by communicating effectively with internal teams and escalating issues when necessary.
Experience:
- Prior experience in retail, customer service, or sales, preferably within the lumber and building materials industry.
- Hands-on experience with small engine repair and maintenance is strongly preferred.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to diagnose and repair small engine equipment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with point-of-sale systems.
- Experience with inventory or ERP systems is a plus.
- Familiarity with small engine diagnostic tools and repair manuals.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift materials or equipment as needed (up to 50 lbs).
- Manual dexterity and ability to operate tools and machinery safely.
