This is work in the maintenance and repair of aquatics equipment, aquatics facility equipment, and swimming pools at City recreation facilities.
Position Duties- Performs minor electrical repairs on, and routine maintenance of, motors, blowers, and fans.
- Repairs watering system pipes, changes out defective valves, sprinklers, faucets, showers, toilets, and sinks.
- Maintains and repairs pumps, gauged valves, and other circulation system equipment as required.
- Works with vendors to find parts.
- Tests chemical balance of circulated water, makes adjustments, and documents findings with detailed notes.
- Repairs and maintains lawn mowers, edgers, weed eaters, blowers, and other lawn equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance, including sanding, painting, staining, etc.
- Operates pools and slides as assigned/scheduled.
- Troubleshoots and makes repairs as necessary.
- Checks wave machine equipment, drains water from compressor and lubricator jars, and changes oil when necessary.
- Assists seasonal supervisors with troubleshooting, opening, operating, and cleaning as needed.
- Maintains an organized, accurate inventory of securely stored equipment and tools used in maintenance and repair work.
- Obtains and maintains equipment and tools used in maintenance and repair work.
- Performs regular, preventative, and emergency maintenance as assigned.
- Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques commonly used in the maintenance and repair of parks, swimming pools, fountains, and other recreational facilities.
- Knowledge of basic mechanical, electrical, and plumbing procedures as related to recreational facility maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of pool water chemistry.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Skill in the use of equipment and tools used in aquatics facilities maintenance.
- Skill in the operation of a motor vehicle.
- Mental and physical ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Mental and physical ability to work effectively with fellow employees, vendors, and the public.
- Ability to document tasks, water chemistry, and etc. both digitally and in writing.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Maintenance Mechanic, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include OSHA regulations, Health Department guidelines, electrical and plumbing codes, state purchasing laws, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of aquatics systems maintenance and repair duties. The variety of equipment to be maintained combined with strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to maintain city aquatic facilities equipment and facilities. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of recreation services to the public.

- Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, engineers, contractors, vendors, and the public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed outdoors or in a pump/chemical room while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects up to 50 pounds, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of sound and smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office, aquatics facilities, and outdoors, occasionally in cold, hot, or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
Minimum Qualifications- Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), and
- Two (2) years recent experience in electrical and mechanical work.
- Possession of Certified Pool Operator certification preferred.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Employees will be required to obtain a Certified Pool Operator certification within one (1) year of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer. (See Condition for details.)
- A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. (PBA09/10/01)
- An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.

- Employees are required submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12)
