About the Department

This position is responsible for performing technical duties in support of the construction, repair, and maintenance of City facilities. An incumbent in this position may progress with time in grade and a demonstrated increase in skill levels to a Facilities Carpenter II.

Position Duties
  • Participates in the renovation and remodeling of existing structures to include demolition, framing, drywalling, painting, installation of ceiling and flooring, and installation of windows and doors.


  • Purchases materials according to City policy and procedures, as needed, to complete work projects.


  • Performs woodworking construction to include building desks, tables, bookshelves, cabinets, signs, etc.


  • Primes, paints, seals, and waterproofs surfaces of existing structures, both interior and exterior surfaces, pressure washes sidewalks, decks, walls, etc.


  • Assists technicians in the installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other building systems.


  • Assists in new construction to include the framing and laying out buildings, installing decking, roofing, drywall, doors, and windows, etc.


  • Processes and completes work orders in the computer system accounting for labor and materials.


  • Operates city vehicles to work sites, etc.


  • Performs related duties as required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION


  • Knowledge of building maintenance principles and practices.


  • Knowledge of wood, masonry, and metal construction.


  • Knowledge of building codes and ADA requirements.


  • Knowledge of carpentry practices.

  • Knowledge of facility construction, repair, and maintenance principles.


  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software.


  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and blueprints.


  • Skill in the use of tools, both hand and power tools.


  • Skill in the operation of motor vehicles.


  • Ability to solve problems and exercise critical thinking.


  • Skill in interpersonal relations.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS


The Facilities Supervisor (Construction) assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with City procedures and the precision of the results with the initial request.


GUIDELINES


Guidelines include building codes, ADA requirements, contract specifications, and both City and department policies and procedures.   These guidelines are generally clear and explicit but may require interpretation in application.


COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK


  • The work consists of related technical duties.  The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the difficulty of the work.


  • The purpose of this position is to support in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City facilities.  Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective sustainment of those facilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.  The employee frequently lifts both light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes a sense of smell. Incumbents need full use of lower extremities and back muscles to push, pull and/or lift to 50 pounds, work on ladders, and in elevated lifts, in confined, tight or high places and locations.


  • The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse, and outdoors and can be performed in adverse, cold or inclement weather to include potentially hazardous conditions.  The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts.  Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.


SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY


None.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), and


  • Two (2) years experience in routine construction (framing and laying-out buildings, installing doors and windows, etc.) and remodeling/repairing (hanging/finishing/patching drywall, installing ceiling and flooring, etc.)


  • Two (2) years experience in carpentry work (building cabinets, desks, shelves, etc.) preferred.


  • One (1) year recent experience with basic computer skills preferred.


  • One (1) year recent experience using Central Square preferred.


  • One (1) year experience reading blueprints, schematics, or engineering drawings preferred.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Possession of a valid driver license and acceptable driving record.    (PBA 9/10/01)


  • An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks. 


  • Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position.  (PBA 8/13/12)


  • Must meet the City of Dothan’s employment physical standard, which includes drug/alcohol testing.
