    Job Summary: Assists in the care and tutoring of physically and mentally disabled students.


    New Hire Hourly Rate: Grade 6: $21.60 - $24.14 DOE 
    Internal Hourly Rate: Determined by the
    Work Day: 7 hours
    Work Year: 9 months
    Bargaining Unit: Education Support Staff Association (ESSA)

    Job Qualifications/Requirements (please review job description for qualifications and duties of the position):

     
    1. Must meet one of the three qualifications:
      1. High school diploma, or equivalent, and have either completed or the ability to complete the ParaProfessional Assessment within four (4) months of hire; or
      2. Associate’s degree or higher; or
      3. Completion of two years of higher education (at least 48 semester hours) or the equivalent.
    2. Must possess an understanding of developmental disabilities.
    3. Must demonstrate proper lifting skills in order to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. regularly.
    4. Tutoring skills commensurate with the level of the assigned student.
    5. Must be able to be trained to implement Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI, physical restraint).
    6. Empathy for special needs of disabled children and an ability to communicate with physically and mentally disabled students.
    7. Ability to hear and speak to exchange information; dexterity of hands and fingers for operating office equipment, carrying, pushing or lifting classroom equipment and supplies; bending at the waist; reaching overhead, above the shoulders or horizontally to store equipment; and seeing to observe students in classroom activities.
    8. Moving around a classroom or playground environment freely and independently to observe children naturally and unobtrusively.
    9. Ability to lift, walk, run, stand, etc. Must be able to remain outside for 30 minutes at 20 degrees below zero.
    10. If the posted vacancy lists a requirement for signing skills, the applicant must at a minimum have completed ASL I and ASL II or have the equivalent skills gained by having completed these courses.
