Summary/Objective
Commissary Attendants are responsible for the stocking, preparation, and setting up of our concession stands. Event cooks will be responsible for cooking in a fast-paced working environment for UMD Hockey games that take place on Friday and Saturday evenings, as well as other DECC events that take place throughout the year.
Schedule
The Commissary Attendant & Event Cook position is a part-time position in our Concessions Department. The position is a hybrid of weekday/daytime commissary attendant hours as well as weekend/evening event-based cooking position. Shifts per week will vary based on DECC event needs, availability for UMD Men’s Hockey games are essential. Shifts are flexible, and other shift opportunities will be available as needed.
Requirements and Competencies
- At least one year of cooking or prep cook experience.
- Basic understanding of or the ability to learn basic sanitation and regulations for workplace safety.
- Basic understanding of or the ability to learn food handling techniques, preparation, and cooking procedures.
- Ability to move quickly to different areas within the facility
- Ability to function well in a high paced and at times stressful environments.
- Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills.
- Works well in a team-oriented environment.
- Able to adapt and deal with frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.

Essential Functions – Commissary Attendant
- Perform stocking duties in concessions and in commissary before and during events.
- Maintain all equipment/product in a neat, clean, and orderly manner.
- Report any equipment issues to management.
- Prepare food items for events which requires the use of a knife, slicer, mixer, etc.
- Setting up and tearing down of concessions stands, including de-stocking and putting equipment away.
- Must be a self-starter who can work well with people in a team setting.
- Ability to define problems and resolve them quickly.

Essential Functions – Event Cook
- Prepare concession food items while maintaining the highest food quality and safety standards. Examples: Pizzas, Burgers, Fried Foods, Hot Sandwiches, etc.
- Preparing food leading to rush times while being mindful of not overcooking and not having lots of waste.
- Responsible for quality and quantity of production of hot and colds foods with proper rotation practices.
- Operate large-volume cooking equipment, such as grills, fryers, flat tops, ovens, and pizza ovens.
- Multitasking between several different cooking tasks at once while keeping the hot holding window full and organized.
- Assist Concessions Operations Manager and FOH Concessions Manager with food production as needed.
- Maintain clean work areas including dishwashing, equipment cleaning, and assigned cleaning projects by the Concessions Operations Manager.
- Report any maintenance problems or other problem areas to the supervisor as they occur.
- Work positively and efficiently as a team to complete tasks.

Required dress code may fluctuate based on the events held at the DECC
Stocking, Prepping, Set Up shifts require jeans (no holes) and a t-shirt (DECC preferred when other events are happening in the building).
Event days, The DECC will provide polos or t-shirts with the DECC logo. Jeans and sneakers are acceptable.
Event Cook
A DECC t-shirt will be provided by the DECC. Jeans (no holes) and proper sneakers preferable non-slip/closed toe shoes are acceptable.
Work Environment
The majority of work will be performed indoors; some events will be held outdoors in different seasons. Many of the work areas will fluctuate from moderate to loud noise levels. The temperature in the work areas can fluctuate from extremely hot and humid (80-90 degrees) to cold, such as outdoor winter weather in freezing temperatures.
Physical Demands
This position will require someone that is able to stand on their feet for many hours at a time, moving quickly to different places in the facility based on event needs. Often, multiple events are taking place at the same time, and there will be a lot of walking to the different event spaces. The employee will need to use their hands frequently, and be able to see, hear, and speak often. This position will require bending and maneuvering, and the ability to move and lift to 50 pounds at times.
Additional Eligibility Requirements
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Successful completion of reference checks.
- Successful completion of a background check.
- Successful completion of a drug test, if applicable.
Work Authorization/Security Clearance Requirements
The DECC uses USCIS Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment. On the form, an employee must attest to his or her employment authorization. The employee is required to present the DECC with acceptable documents evidencing identity and employment authorization at the time of hire. The DECC will examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s).
The list of acceptable documents can be provided by Human Resources.

This position is at will. This means if you are offered the position and accept, your employment with the DECC is for an indefinite period of time and it is subject to termination by you or the DECC, with or without cause, with or without notice, and at any time.
