The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
The Public Relations Manager is a strategic storyteller and brand ambassador for San Antonio Zoo, responsible for managing media relations, public communications initiatives that enhance the zoo’s reputation locally, regionally, and nationally. This role requires strong leadership, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to balance proactive storytelling with responsive crisis management. The Public Relations Manager collaborates across departments to develop integrated campaigns that highlight the zoo’s mission in animal care, conservation, and education while ensuring consistent brand messaging across all platforms.

Media & Public Relations
- Develop and execute comprehensive PR strategies to promote zoo events, initiatives, and announcements.
- Write and distribute press releases, media advisories, talking points, and statements.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with media contacts, influencers, and community partners.
- Host press conferences, media visits, ribbon cuttings, and public relations events.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, coordinating interviews and appearances with subject matter experts.
Storytelling & Content Creation
- Create compelling stories that highlight the zoo’s mission, animals, conservation efforts, and educational programming.
- Capture and produce multimedia content (photo, video, social copy) for use in PR campaigns and marketing initiatives.
- Ensure brand consistency across external communications, digital platforms, and promotional materials.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
- Partner with internal teams (animal care, education, conservation, membership, development, and events) to identify storytelling opportunities.
- Support private and consumer events with PR and media coverage.
- Assist with prospectus development, presentations, and communications for PR initiatives.
Crisis & Issues Management
- Act as a key resource for crisis communications, preparing statements and coordinating responses with leadership.
- Anticipate potential risks and develop proactive communication plans.
Leadership & Administration
- Mentor and guide PR staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Manage PR budgets, timelines, and external vendor relationships.
- Create regular reports summarizing media coverage, and PR campaign results.
- Uphold company policies and consistently demonstrate guest service and hospitality inside and outside of the zoo.
Other Responsibilities
- Performs other work-related duties as required and assigned.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.
- Minimum 4 years of progressive experience in public relations, communications, or media, including at least 2 years in a management role.
- Proven success in developing and executing media campaigns, event promotions, and social media strategies.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and public speaking skills.
- Strong understanding of brand storytelling, marketing principles, and digital media.
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, InDesign) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with media monitoring, analytics, and scheduling platforms.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience in crisis communications and issues management strongly preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus.
