Ideal Candidate Statement
Provide sign language interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. These services may be required in various settings, including lectures, lab classes, exams, assessments, group discussions, collaborative projects, campus events, workshops, health center appointments, counseling appointments, meetings with professors and/or various campus resource advisors. The Sign Language Interpreter is responsible for maintaining professional ethics and adhering to the interpreter's role, following RID's CPC. This position requires fluency in both English and American Sign Language, along with a high level of mental concentration. Interpreting assignments are based on the needs of matriculated Deaf students attending Ohlone College. The District employs two types of interpreters: Non-Certified ASL Interpreters and Certified ASL Interpreters, which include NIC, NAD Level V, CSC, CI, CT, and CI/CT certifications.
This is a temporary position.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide interpretation and transliteration services in American Sign Language (ASL), oral interpretation, or other appropriate methods to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals in a variety of settings, including educational and institutional contexts.Facilitate communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and faculty, staff, and peers in diverse settings such as meetings, instructional sessions, workshops, events, appointments, and other related activities.
- Analyze environmental factors for effective communication, including lighting, seating, visual aids, and technological tools; suggest adjustments to enhance accessibility.
- Interpret lectures, presentations, discussions, and activities, conveying information effectively using ASL and providing voice interpretation as required.
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials, technical vocabulary, and subject content to ensure accurate communication.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and other stakeholders; collaborate with faculty and administrators to address individual needs and enhance accessibility.
- Stay current with advancements in interpretation practices, technology, and relevant legislation through professional development and ongoing education.
- Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity to individuals' diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and equitable environment.
- Participate in training, workshops, and other development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Perform related duties as assigned to support accessibility and communication needs.

Certified ASL Interpreter: NIC, NAD Level V, CSC, CI, CT, CI/CT CertifiedANDMust have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.
