Project Duration : 13 Weeks
Shift : Night 3-12
Job Summary
A Medical Laboratory Technician performs a wide variety of clinical laboratory tests and procedures on biological specimens (such as blood, urine, tissues) to assist physicians in diagnosing, treating, and monitoring disease.
The MLT ensures timely, accurate, and reliable test results by following standard operating procedures, maintaining equipment, and ensuring quality control.
Key Responsibilities / Duties
- Sample Collection & Preparation
- Receive, handle, label, and store patient specimens appropriately.
- Prepare biological samples (blood, urine, tissues, etc.) for analysis.
- Ensure specimen integrity (volume, condition, preservation) for reliable testing.
- Laboratory Testing
- Perform routine diagnostic tests in areas such as hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and coagulation.
- Use both manual and automated laboratory instruments / analyzers.
- Prepare regents, stains, and standard solutions required for tests.
Quality Control & Assurance
· Conduct quality control (QC) checks on instruments, reagents, and test processes.
· Implement and monitor quality assurance programs / continuous improvement processes.
· Participate in proficiency testing and document the results.
· Equipment Maintenance
· Operate and maintain laboratory instruments, including calibration and routine preventive maintenance.
· Troubleshoot technical problems with lab equipment and escalate when necessary.
Data Management & Reporting
· Accurately record test results and maintain laboratory logs / records.
· Enter test orders and results into Laboratory Information System (LIS).
· Verify test results, perform result validation, and report findings to physicians / clinical team.
· Safety and Compliance
· Follow all lab safety protocols, including handling of biological hazards, chemical reagents, and biohazard waste.
· Adhere to regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP), and ensure lab practices meet accreditation requirements.
· Maintain confidentiality of patient information (HIPAA or relevant privacy laws).
· Training & Continuous Development
· Train / mentor junior lab staff, students, or interns as required.
· Participate in training programs, competence assessments, and continuing education to stay updated.
· Assist in writing or updating standard operating procedures (SOPs).
· General Organizational Duties
· Help manage lab inventory, order supplies, and ensure adequate stock of reagents and consumables.
· Contribute to process improvement initiatives and suggest workflow enhancements.
· Support survey readiness / audit activities (e.g., inspections or accreditation).
Qualifications / Skills
· Education: Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology / Clinical Laboratory Science or a related field.
· Certification: Certification as an MLT (preferred) from recognized bodies (e.g., ASCP, AMT) if applicable.
· Experience: Some prior laboratory experience may be required / preferred (varies by organization).
· Must have graduated from an approved program; 3-12 hour shifts (after 1st week of training). Rotate weekends (usually every 5th weekend); no call; Fill in Thursday night shift and can pick up vacancies if not filled with regular staff; Microbiology preferred and if not – gram stains, planting cultures, blood cultures a must. Start date: April 22nd.
· Must be proficient in phlebotomy.
· Must be able to do Blood Bank testing
· Will work holidays as needed (done on a rotating basis)
· Be proficient with Covid regulations (PPE, isolation rooms, etc)
· Must be able to multitask and prioritize.
· Ability to work alone.
