Responsibilities:

 

JOB PURPOSE: 
Perform inpatient and/or outpatient cardiac ultrasound testing to include 2D echo / Doppler exams with 
bubble study, contrast as well as limited studies for cardiac function, effusion assessment and thrombus 
assessment. Provide complex technical care with the use of ultrasound technology for adolescent, adult, 
and geriatric patients and provide all necessary documentation and preliminary exam findings.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Performs basic complete echocardiogram, using safe operation of Ultrasound equipment to 
ensure high quality for diagnostic scans. 
• Performs, analyzes, and documents results of 2-D, M-Mode, and Doppler echocardiograms as 
ordered by a physician. 
• Prepares patients for exams, maintains supplies, and equipment. 
• Operates other medical equipment as needed. 
• Seeks opportunity to observe complex procedures. 
• Processes all required paperwork. 
• Obtains all measurements and data according to PHC echo standard protocol. 
• Prepares a preliminary report for review by a cardiologist. 
• Identifies critical findings and notifies appropriate staff prior to patient departure, documents 
notification. 
• Adjusts equipment settings to optimize study information and image quality 
• Explains procedures to patients to reduce their anxiety and to obtain patient cooperation. [AIDET] 
• Effectively communicates with patients, family, and other health care team members. 
• Participates in departmental in-services and communication 
• Maintains professional growth by participating in educational programs and activities to maintain 
knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. 
• Maintains appropriate Registry and updates certification to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation 
as required 
• Appropriately documents IV insertion/removal and administration of agitated saline and/or 
enhancing agent in EMR. 
• Responsible for completing all aspects of procedure documentation in the EMR 
• Participates in performance improvement data collection. 
• Follows all safety requirements of the hospital and department. 
• Knowledge and location of procedural supplies. 
• Completes annual compliance and competency requirements

 

 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED: 
• Graduate of registry approved ultrasound program, a CAAHEP accredited Cardiac Sonographer 
program, or equivalent experience according to Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). 
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 
• None
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW: 
• Current registered or registry eligible with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical 
Sonographers (ARDMS) with RDCS certification or Cardiovascular Credentialing International 
(CCI) with RCS certification. 
• Must obtain appropriate credential within twelve months of hire date. 
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification in accordance with the American Heart Association is 
required. 
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
• Two years of related experience as a hospital inpatient or outpatient / ambulatory cardiac 
sonographer preferred. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES 
1. Skill and competency in performing detailed cardiac ultrasound studies 
2. Skill and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing 
3. Proficient in windows-based computer software 
4. Experience with electronic health records and cardiovascular PACS systems 
5. Ability to work as a member of a team and maintain / facilitate daily department / office and patient 
work flow. 
6. Must deliver SAFE care in accordance with the Always Safe program. 
7. Must use AIDET with every encounter and be proficient with service recovery.
